The project didn't get shelved. That's a good thing

Yep, definitely looking like it just has the current car's ac condenser behind the grille, no intercooler. However, keep in mind that sidemount intercoolers are a thing too, the Nissan S13,S14, and ER33 all used sidemounts, and it could explain the need for the functional side vents, so I wouldn't completely rule out forced induction quite yet.
That being said, if it is turbocharged, I'd love for it to be the 3-cylinder from the GR Yaris. https://i.imgur.com/I8hdn9W.jpg |
I'm guessing the tail lights will be a similar design to the GR Yaris'

First clear look at GR86 / BRZ prototype during testing

It seems this car is very similar to the current models. However, it does look just a bit larger this time, possibly to compensate for a turbo model. However, there's no way this particular model has a turbo. There would be a cutout for the intercooler on the hood if it was top mounted or it would be more obvious in the front. But judging from the size of that opening, they may be considering a front mount intercooler in the future. They would also likely use bigger rear tires as a performance 2.4L turbo in a light car would be a beast, even with good tires (Porsche Cayman territory). I hope they make a proper STI turbo model this time. I still have mixed feelings about turbos but I do kind of miss that mid range torque and noise that turbos make. But the 2.4L will likely address that torque dip and make the engine feel a little more inline with other performance cars. |
Could have a top mount intercooler. Fed via scoop like the other FA24DIT vehicles (Ascent, Outback). Would require a taller hood...which some of you have pointed out looks like it got taller.
The hood would also have to be taller because the engine would need to sit a little higher than 1st gen, because of the low mount turbo. My bet is still FA24 N/A with 240hp and 180 ft-lb. My hope is for quality tires to tame the unenlightened YouTube reviewers. |
I also noticed the wider tires.
I think the goal of the second generation is “a better handing car.” |

That’s right here is the FA24 in the Outback. A setup like this on the twins would add weight to the hood and wouldn’t be the most efficient in terms of air flow.

If it has 217 wheel horsepower it will be much quicker than the current gen car. All depends on where they're measuring output

I think it’ll be ~217 at the crank. Manufacturers never reference WHP. I do think we will get much more torque though. |
I think this is gonna look much better than we are feeling right now. Front wheel bulges drawn all the way down to the front. Tail lights draw farther up the side of the car make for a nice rounder shape - feels a bit merc GT coupe with some m coupe, and with connected reflector which is on a lot of great cars, 911, FD.. The side mirrors rounder more elegant, and the side looks pretty decent overall. I like that lower angle on the rear side window.
If it performs better, retains its driver feel, and has a stronger engine we're in good shape. |
