What mods needed to turbo a FR-S
 
Hello. Sorry if i dont know how to use the forum, i just created this account. I have a stock 2017 FR-S and i was wondering what mods are needed in order for the turbo kit to be stable inside of the vehicle, and so i can get the most use out of the kit. If anyone can give me a full list of mods needed before the turbokit, i would be very happy.

If you don't want close to / more than 300WHP, just buy a base model turbo kit, and something to tune it with. I would recommend ECUtek, but it sounds like you're going for the Cheap / Fast style build.

As you'll find is advised here commonly, do not take on a turbo project if you do not have a lot of money to burn.
The turbo kit is the cheap part. This is not something that can be done reliably on a budget.

If you just want to figure it out and want to start cheap, get the OpenFlash Tablet, and the SBD turbo kit. Let your tuner know that you're just looking for mid 200s and if they're sensible, they'll get you to that mark and you won't need any power supporting mods like injectors, fuel pump, clutch, nothing. The only thing you need to be mindful of is your temperatures and installation.

A turbo kit introduces a lot of possible failure points. A severe oil or coolant leak will spell death for your engine if you let it go unnoticed. An exhaust leak at the flanges will introduce a lot of fuel correction, and a tune that loads the engine up with low end torque will bend a rod quickly.

All in all, no matter your choice, budget 10k if you want to feel safe with whatever you choose. No, I'm not kidding.

Jebus I know these kits are pretty standard and will run on whatever handheld tune but why is everyone so against a professional tune on a dyno? I think it's worth the money just watch the pull. I am down to try almost anything parts wise but I would just rather a pro tune my car than try it myself or use some one-sized fits all approach. Then again most of my modded cars (BRZ is mostly stock) are not that standard (even for aftermarket).

i have the money to do this project, about an extra 12k to spend. money is not much of a constraint.

It's possible they don't know any reputable shops in the area ? I have no idea where the closest non motorcycle dyno is. And judging from the cars I tend to see on the road in my area i'm not sure the dyno shop (if there is one) would even know what to do if it's not a "muh V8". :iono:

sounds like you have the budget. K swap or LS swap, then worry about a turbo.

What kind of power would you like, then? I stand by what I said, get the JDL or SpeedByDesign Kit ( Or the Greddy 518z if you want to spend for the genuine thing), get an ECUtek license, cable/dongle and RaceRom patch (Comes to about $1,000 USD) and find a tuner after it's all installed.

Sorry, im new to swapping engines but doesnt that introduce alot of problems or am i wrong? If anything i would like to put either a RB25 or a RB26 in to it. (sorry for sounding like a RB fanboy)

Ok. Then reference my post you just quoted, it's a perfect recipe for your goals.

Buy a basic turbo kit like one of the following-
JDL
FullBlown
Greddy 518z
SpeedbyDesign
Ptuning

Get the Exedy stage 1 clutch
Get the ECUtek dongle + Cable, get the ECUtek license, get the ECUtek RaceRom patch
Get tuned, get fast.
