Raise BRZ
 

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone know any alternatives to raising my BRZ's height other than buying $2k+ cusco coilovers. Ground clearance is a must for Alaskan winters because of the ruts and height differences between plowed roads to private lots.

The other thread was in regard to coilovers. This thread is in regard to everything but.

The subject of that thread was "Coilover to Raise Ride Height". I'm not sure if its clear, but im not looking for coilovers. I don't expect to get the response i'm looking for in the other thread, since that was about coilovers.

Did i mention the other thread was about coilovers, and this one isnt?

ground control can make you a sleeve kit with 7" springs that will raise the vehicle. I have their kit on my car and with 7" springs it raised it easily.

I think it retails for about $430 + shipping. Call GC and they can build you a kit. I went with the 350lb front spring and 425lb rear spring and it's quite good, but they have other rates as well.

One thing you need to keep in mind when raising your OEM suspension with taller springs of using a Ground Control kit is potential damage to your damper from topping out. The OEM damper is designed for a certain amount of travel/stroke. If you raise it too far, its possible that you'll have no more droop travel and you will top out the damper when a wheel drops into a pothole or rut.

If you go the GC route, analyze your stock damper (or the damper you plan to use) and check how much travel it has as well as where it would sit at the static ride height you want to use.

A couple companies make upper mount spacers as well. The front strut mounts are from the GD (02-07) Impreza, and I believe the rears are from the GR (08+) Impreza. Jackson Rally and a couple others I cant think of at the moment make spacer kits that can add 1" of lift.

That would probably be the better way to go. At least in regards to damper travel. I know Paranoid Fabrications makes front and rear spacers for GC/GD Subaru which used macpherson front/chapman rear. They even provided extended tophat bolts for the really thick spacers. But not sure what would be needed for the rear on the multi link. Like if you'd have to space the entire cradle down or what.

Whatever you do, make you you get an alignment done afterwards. Your front/rear toe will be off if you don't.

I like this plan as well. How certain are you the fronts are GD impreza and the back are GR impreza? Jackson Rally's website shows they are out of stock, but then again they havent updated their site since Nov '11.

I found subtle solutions offer 1" lift spacers as well, but they sell a full set (front and rear) for the gd and the gr. It would suck to have to buy two sets and only use half of each. Maybe i should try to email them and see if they can make a custom kit for me hmm....

Roughly how much do you want to raise it by? The stock shocks will have certain limits.

Could possibly look at installing tallish winter tires in addition to tweaking the suspension I suppose. Certain compact SUV tires might even fit in there.

If the roads are that bad why not just buy a sub 1k beater pickup or something though instead of risking dumping your 86 into a snowbank and caking it with road salt? An 86 on snow would be a hoot, but bad stuff could happen too.

I am 100% certain the fronts are GD. The rears are GR style but I'm not sure if the dimensions are the same. RCE or another company that's been doing suspension work would be able to confirm. I would be surprised if they were any different.
