Now try acronyms of acronyms of shortened phrases (specifically not an acronym, though they are written in all caps) strung together.

Just a pixel on my Pixel, but first pics of the Jupiter-Satun conjunction (center left, see bottom shot)...

Also bonus sunset...

I'm more the gassy giant. It's overcast here. I won't be able to see it IRL :(

Cross-posting here for more awesome pics, hopefully

They as in "those planets over there"...

I bet someone is going to get some real pictures. If not, I'm sure the internet at large will have some.

I asked @jeffchap if he would post images. Check out his art in the hobbies thread. Fingers crossed!

Yeah I saw, that's really what I'm waiting for lol.

jeffchap 12-21-2020 08:10 PM

I shot it, but I don't think it's going to come out too good. It's so low in the sky it was hard to shoot. I'll get the images processed and hopefully have them up tomorrow though.

Sorry guys, I didn't really get anything worth looking at. It was too low and blurry to get any detail on Jupiter. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d23f6744a3.jpg

It's still really cool to see two planets in the same telescope image.

SN9 rolled to the test stand. Should be soon for next test.
SpaceX just posted this vid of SN8.

Belated happy perihelion everyone!

(I'm pretty sure it was yesterday, Jan 2nd, and I forgot)

I watched the live stream of the SpaceX launch. It was just for a satellite, but still cool.

Now if the FAA could just get their act together long enough to give them clearance.

The FAA has to get their act together to begin with before it can be for any period of time.

I've been watching this feed. It's close enough you can see 10 barely moving into place.

I find it very interesting that these new rockets look so much like the ones from the 1950s sf movies.

I see it too.

There aren't really many new ideas floating around out there, we can only bend the laws of physics so far.

Source: have worked on twin ion engine (TIE) propulsion systems. Now working with plasma engines.

ls1ac 01-31-2021 04:08 PM

It is also interesting to me that things like the plasma engines has taken so long to work.
Back in the 60s when i was at RPI we were talking about the possibility's.

RIP SN9 - wow that was an even bigger explosion.
Looks like SN10 didn't get damaged.

Understatement of the year so far "We just need to work on that landing a little bit"

Right?! I didn’t grow up with television, but I had occasional access to my grandparents video collection as well as an attic full of my uncles old science fiction novels. These newest SpaceX rockets just look like Tom Swift’s Flying Laboratory to me.

I know what I’m watching this week....

Never mind upright landing, I'll be more impressed when SpaceX gets their ship to be able to maintain a circular path over the ground like Flash Gordon does.

Poor Elon. He gives and gives but it's never enough. :(

Well, straight up is relatively easy, landing is harder, but making a cylinder fly in a circle requires a special breed of engineering (or a wire and nail offstage)

Is something running on a plasma engine now? I've only heard of the theoretical model from the Princeton Laboratory of Plasma Physics. And the operating space rockets use the engines of the last century.
That's not bad. It's just too early to talk about plasma engines.

I didn't say that we should ignore this.
I asked if there is anything that works. At least experimental. I love progress with all its pros and cons.
I especially like what the space industry is turning into. Maybe it's not too late to get a new profession?

SpaceX lost a booster tonight. The booster's sixth attempt to land. You could tell there was a problem after the final landing burn, engines were supposed to cut off, but there was still bright flashing light. They cut away and did not cut back until the drone ship where you could see a faint light off in the distance as it pencil'd into the ocean.

TommyJ 02-16-2021 11:29 AM

This is not exactly what I meant when I said that I like the modern space industry.
Nevertheless, it is noted that the main task has been completed. Hope no one gets hurt by such events.
I'm surprised that Greenpeace doesn't react violently to such things.
NASA invites everyone to join watching Preservance landing.
An online broadcast of the landmark event is scheduled for February 18, it will be possible to follow it both on the NASA website and on the agency's official YouTube channel.
This is the news I meant.

News

Recently there was a claim that the Chinese moon rover had discovered a strange monolith.
Scientists speculate that the unusual object could be debris from a crater that appeared as a result of a collision with the moon.

A rock about 1 kilometre high was discovered on the "dark side" of the moon. Exposure to wind and heat cycles on the Moon usually leads to the destruction of sharp corners and "rounding" of objects on the satellite. And the detected object has very sharp edges.
