I don't know if we have done this, but what is your favorite space/scifi movie or movie series?

2001: A Space Odyssey

I wasn't going to say anything, but I also didn't really get that one. I think I watched it for a high school literature/media class. I feel like it was meant to be taken with other drugs.

Never watched either in entirety. My brothers were both really into Dr Strangelove for some reason.

Also, happy Solstice everyone!

Captain Snooze 12-21-2023 06:08 PM

Thread hijack.
I wouldn't classify Dr Strangelove as sci-fi.

I've always found it immensely fun to watch, even on VHS on TV. It was the first DVD I got, but they ruined it with all these digital artifacts right off the bat, like stepped gradients from dark to light in the opening eclipse sequence, geez... Finally a few years back I got to watch a 70mm film of it on the big screen with epic sound at Somerville Theater, one of only a few theaters could play it. Gott-dam! Stunning...

It's not for everyone. But personally I cannot *stand* 99% of "Hollywood" movies. One of the more recent ones: "Ford vs. Ferrari". I mean, the story was EPIC, and they f'd it all up with stupid current-era tropes and things that *obviously* didn't happen (you don't slowly turn your head to stare down your competitor driving down the Mulsanne at night at well over 200mph). Swear to god they churn out this shove-it-down-their-throats-they-love-it CRAP, and people just eat it up. I literally squirm in my seat at movies like this. Le Mans, now THAT was a great movie and 1000x more realistic despite being fiction.

Anyway, after 2001, the theatrical release of Bladerunner (prefer over the director's cuts) closely followed by the original "Alien".

Then Star Wars. Not "Episode IV", just "Star Wars", before G.L. "improved" it (the horror... the horror...). The practical effects followed directly from 2001, they even copied some of the scenes (Star Destroyer in opening scene is basically lifted from scenes of the Discovery on its way to Jupiter in 2001. It's a pretty stupid story but it's legit FUN, and the actors aren't all stilted and annoying, they're just riffing along and having fun. Kind of the opposite of 2001 but with similar attention to detail in the effects. Only the original theatrical release, though. Which is totally unavailable through legit means now. Fortunately now there's 4K77 which someday I'll have to get around to downloading...

@ZDan, I've watched 2001 at least three times just because it's such a classic movie. First time I watched it was on LaserDisc, man I loved that machine. It was literally twice the resolution VHS. I had a decent collection that I sold when I sold the discplayer after RCA lost the VHS battle (similar to beta).

I also watched it in Bluray (with some friends) and on DVD. It's actually one of the few movies I've watched 3 times. So, I enjoyed it, but still found it too slow paced, which I guess was the point.

Anyway, my actual alltime favorite movie is Fail Safe, but it's not really scifi, more a war movie.

And @Captain Snooze as far as this being a highjack, well it's infinitely more on track than "flat earth" stuff!

NO!!! You have to keep your old media and media players! I have found that a lot of my absolute *favorite* movies, I can only get the cut I like on VHS! "Brazil" and "The City of Lost Children" are two of the big ones for me, no DVD or BluRay has the same cuts as the VHS versions which are *immensely* superior!

I've watched it probably a dozen times, and probably half of those times I fell asleep before the end. But it's just all gorgeousness and gorgeosity to borrow a phrase from "A Clockwork Orange"! And *god* how I cannot stand movies where they have to just have ACTION ACTION ACTION from beginning to end, really really hate that...

I love it because B58 is gorgeous plane! But the idea of US bombing it's own cities to make up for bombing Moscow is just too dumb and Henry Fonda acting all like "well we *have* to do this" while doing it is annoying... Or am I misremembering that? it has been a *long* time...

I had an approximately 14 second consideration as to whether I post this here or the TIL thread. Here won out.
