Reload this Page 2014 FRS with 56K kms, Odd transmission issue.
I'm hearing a faint sort of whining sound during cold starts,
When the clutch is pressed in, the noise goes away, when I take my foot off, it comes back. After a quick drive, the noise goes away. quick restart, the noise is not there. It comes and goes from day to day, the car is out of warranty period. Shifts gears without an issue, no odd noises |
That's your throw out bearing going bad. It's common with the earlier editions. I had to replace mine around 66K miles (106K kilometers).

Change it. Change it SOON. Don't wait since it seems OK. Change it. Believe me. Change it. |
The tob doesn't heal itself. The noise will get worse. From experience

I changed mine when i could hear a slight rattle in gear driving at parking lot speeds as well as that whining sound at idle that goes away when you clutch in. This was maybe at 45-50k miles. It really wasn't that bad and probably had a couple 10s of thousands of miles left in it tbh. Just not something you want to explode while you're driving.
|
@Tcoat how did someone let it get that bad. how does one not notice, oh my honks and rattles has turned into a squeal and a grind, and the smell of burning? Gee.

here is a video, its hard to hear because it is soo subtle, but pretty much as described, a faint whining noise during cold starts, goes away when clutch is pressed in, also goes away after warms up or some driving. Thank you for your replies
https://youtu.be/XMwN-GH-Fzw I had a friend who is a mechanic come by, and he suggested that it is normal, and might be just my flywheel sound |
i didnt hear anything? i'd say leave it be, the whine or rattle will be obvious

the car shifts fine pulls good. no weird sounds when releasing the clutch while changing gears etc... no rattle, just that tiny whine. |
Here's mine. Tcoat's driven it. Used transmission - zero change for 40 Kmi. I've had worse for much longer. Like we discussed, just be nice to it. No gearbox is indestructible but this one is particularly sensitive to abuse.

Also, can you elaborate a little on being nice to the transmission? Sorry still new to this stuff. Thank you for the information. |
