2017 Toyota 86 Hill Assist

Hello,

I recently just bought a 2017 Toyota 86 and I turned on the HIll assist feature and the light is illuminated. However, whenever I park on a hill and try it, the car rolls back still? the hill isn't that steep its my drive way. But on another car the same drive way hill assist works.

Anyone know why its not working or activating?

I would love to hear details exactly how you "tried it".

Welcome, abn (airborne?) to our forum -

I don't have that feature on my car, so I can't be much help except to check the fuse.

I hope you get it figured out.

Just like in my 2017 Subaru wrx I put the car in first gear on the hill tap the brakes, and it would lock the brakes . This is how it is in my subie . When I parked the car on the hill put it in first tapped the brakes to see if it would lock, it wouldn't lock so I let go of the brake to see if it would roll, still rolled back.

Thanks man! Do you happen to know which fuse it is?

If the light is on it can't be the fuse.

The wording in the owner's manual implies that the hill start assist function doesn't press the brake for you, it holds the brake for you, acting more like a line lock than an automatic brake,

Quote:

■Notes for hill-start assist control
●A slight jolt may be felt when starting off backward with the shift lever in R
and then moving forward.
If the braking power of hill-start assist control is insufficient, depress the
brake pedal.

●While the vehicle is stopped, make sure to depress the brake pedal.
If you tried it in your driveway, did you just release the parking brake? You gotta give it the brakes for it to hold the brakes.

Yes on the hill my parking brake was not on. I put the car in first hold on the clutch and i would press the brake and let go a few times to see if it would roll back, when it did roll back i would just drive it up the driveway. It just seemed that it wasnt working like it didnt hold the brake.

Does it work on actual hills or roads steeper than your driveway?

I thought the hill assist didn't work on my BRZ initially until I tried the following steps:
1. Enabling the hill assist on a flat level road. Not sure if it makes a difference or if it calibrates the system, but worth a shot.
2. When you're waiting on a hill, clutch is out, car is in neutral, and brake pedal depressed. When you want to take off, brake still depressed, clutch IN, shift to first, then release brake, clutch out, and take off.

Not sure if it's just me, but the system didn't work when I released the brake before clutching in.

#2 here is how you _should_ be doing it. Not sure what you mean @abn about tapping the brakes??

I do pretty much exactly what NA said above. Car in neutral, ebrake up; I press the brake all the way, dis-engage e-brake (still in neutral); clutch in, shifter into first (brake still applied), start bringing your clutch foot up to slip the clutch as usual, start applying some gas as usual.

The thing I'll mention is that the Assist feature doesn't stay engaged very long. I'd say 2 seconds or so. So part of your issue could be you haven't learned the timing yet; this gave me some issues when I first started using it, because I wasn't "quick enough" at first and the Assist would dis-engage before I was slipping the clutch enough to start into 1st smoothly.

Does the car not give you like a stiffened pedal feel? Because by tapping the brake like in my subie, i put car in first gear tap the brakes and brakes stiffen like holds the brake for 3 seconds for me. For the 86 i dont fee the brakes stiffen at all

Nope. No change in feel whatsoever.

Strange, it does not hold the car at all. I tried it again, just rolled back right away. Maybe it doesn't detect the slope on my drive way? just strange another car detects it. I will try it on a larger hill maybe?

i just roll my foot while on the brake, rev to 3-4k, and while letting off the brake, dump the clutch and pin the throttle until it bounces at fuel cut.

what's the point of having a fun rwd car if i'm not letting everyone else know?!?

The feature is for my girlfriend, trying to learn how to drive stick shift.
