Cooling options for FI 86’s, and tips/tricks for other good supporting mods

EDIT: I chose to go with the JDL kit instead.

Over the next few months I will be moving forward with the Jackson Racing C38 Supercharger Kit for my 86.

I live in North Carolina and the summer here can get humid (not quite like Florida but it gets hot) like 80+ degrees almost every day and humid. But all other seasons are fairly mild (winter is consistently in the 40s, fall and spring 50-70, summer 75-90+)

I don’t track this car, it’s my daily, it has 28,000 miles on it. And I just do NOT want to blow an engine or cause any serious issues. I’ll have the kit just for some every now and then spirited driving, and some 40rolls with random people on the highway once in a while.

I’m looking to reach 270-280 whp, and with the mods I have plus the kit that’s very attainable. (catless UEL, catless FP)

I understand some good options for cooling supercharged 86’s are hood vents, and an oil cooler. I am interested in any other ideas people have as far as fans etc etc (affordable things and keep in mind it’s my daily and I’m not rich).

I’ve seen some information about in the winter an oil cooler can almost prevent the car from getting up to proper running temps. (I understand the cooler is only supposed to kick on to cool down temps once it gets above a certain temp) but for some reason I remember a video saying it made their car have issues in cold days getting up to a good running temp.

So any tips/tricks from you FI guys on ways to keep down temps/if I even really need to get stuff to keep down temps? As I said before I’m no track driver but every once in a while I’ll beat on it, but I typically baby the car. Thanks for taking the time to read this you guys!:thanks:

P.S. Someone PLEASE tell me how long your stock clutch has held up and how much power you’re making/what setup. I’m hoping to make mine last at least for a good while before replacing. Maybe at least 6 months to a year? Also I’m highly considering doing oil temp and oil pressure gauges so if you guys wanna recommend any good and affordable kits that’d be great (Just something to get the job done nothing really high dollar)

im with a jrcs c30, no supporting mods, + a catback. made 262atw on 93(might have been 91). honestly you dont need an oil cooler for DD, but good on you for putting the icing on the cake. im at 40k miles, c30 been on half its life, i dont really track(did 1 track day, was a blast, want to go again). get used to this thread: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60172

its the unofficial jackson racing supercharger thread for all things jrsc. pictures, questions, stories, etc, just post it there. the thread sees daily posts and gets much traffic.
welcome aboard, everyone here's really nice and very responsive.

Depending where you live in NC I understand the summer's there can be muggy and hot. I'd suggest the Jackson Racing dual oil cooler/radiator since you daily the car. It will help get the temps up and keep them cool as well. You shouldn't have to worry about over cooling too much either. As well, you could consider finding some of the hood vents from Verus on the used forums here. Another thing you could consider is the OEM Forester cooler.

I use the Beatrush vented under panel and Cusco oil cooler and my temps never go above 250 unless I'm being very vicious in the summer. I don't track the car, but I also don't have any FI on the car yet.

E85 and/or WMI, both will increase power and keep things cooler, E85 offers more power WMI more cooling.

oil cooler with thermostat, can easily swap in a 197F thermostat so won’t really impact warm up too much can even pair it with oem cooler to speed warmup up quicker. I live in WA and could get away with no oil cooler on my DD but about 4-5months a year I’m glad I have it. The days that are nice and hot outside are the days you often go ripping on it the most.

Hood vents and or hood scoop
Beatrush vented under-panel/skid plate
Gold reflective heat tape every portion of intake inside engine bay.
Radiator water/windshield wiper spray kit.
Radiator ducting
Larger radiator and fans

Just a couple methods to help keep temps down.

- What's your total budget to do this?

- What fuel(s) are available to you and what will you be using?

- What mods, if any, do you already have? Do you anticipate putting on other powertrain mods, such as a header?

I daily my SBD400x turbo 86 for almost 3 years this July 4th and with my oil cooler from JDL(19row) I never see above the temps you would see N/A at all. Its best for mountain runs, spirited driving and I would logically assume tracking plus I run Castrol 0w40 or 5w40 depending on the season.

Sharing something I recently learned, if you go E85, you're going to be replacing those DI sooner than you want to.

Why? Or do you mean PI?

DarkPira7e 04-13-2020 07:00 PM

You should get good vents. Everything else should be fine. If you're really paranoid, look I to the Jackson racing oil cooler/radiator combo

AldoRaine 04-14-2020 12:21 AM

Tomei UEL catless header
Invidia catless non resonated front pipe
TRD catback
K&n intake (irrelevant)
And just tein flex z coils and some cosmis wheels.
No e85, just 93 octane

I’d like to at most just go JRSC C38, Oil cooler, and vents. Aiming for 260-280 whp. I understand the torque will be around 210-230 on that setup as well. I’m very very interested in anyone’s experience with running this much power on the stock clutch. Car has less than 30k miles on it, and I’m trying not to go spending too much money on cooling in case my clutch goes out. As I said it’s my daily so I don’t plan on going nuts with the build just what I need to get it done but always being safe. I do not want to deal with serious engine issues lol.

AldoRaine 04-14-2020 12:23 AM

How’s that clutch holding up??? Upgraded one or? And how much power are you making? Give me the whole rundown pls :)

Chuckls 04-14-2020 10:37 AM

Full Race EFR7163. Making roughly 330ish on e50? Stock clutch held up fine to 93 FI, but once I went into ethanol, it's a slippyboi now.
I've got hood vents. Temps hit 250 if I do multiple full WOT pulls.

Go with a JDL Oil cooler, or GReddy.

Apparently it causes leaking and flow rate changes. Both myself and another friend running E85 occasionally have had to change ours at 60k and 100k respectively. Think it may be related to time more than miles.
