Burning smell

So I drove my 2013 frs around yesterday for about 15 minutes then parked it. When I got out the car I noticed a burning rubber smell. Any idea what it could be? Will be checking my cam plate this weekend, but my mechanic also told me the head gasket might need a fixing soon. Currently has 108xxx miles

Seems like most of these cars have a bit of oil leak going on. Mine sometimes gets stinky when sitting a stoplight too long. It's never made an impact on the oil dipstick.. cam plate is the easiest thing to check.

Your mechanic mentioning the head gasket is concerning, are you actually getting coolant in your oil? It's pretty easy to tell.

When he had the car he saw there was oil on head but very little, I told him there was a a recall that was done prior to my purchase so I thought that's what it was.

Cam plate is usually where it leaks from. But thats super obvious to check if it's leaking or not.

As for the a head gasket, it will smoke white if coolant is leaking. It will smoke black if it's leaking oil.

As for burning rubber that's usually something exhaust related. Either a rubber bushing or a heat shield that is too close to the pipe.

I would get a second opinion on your mechanics buddy. If he recommends a head gasket repair with out it showing related symptoms, he seems odd.

Same. My car always smells hot, especially after driving aggressively or pulling long hills. Used to really worry me. Now I understand it's just one of those things. None of my older cars ever smelled like this though, and if they had had I would have figured I was heading for imminent failure.

I get that after some sideways driving, which I attribute to tires obviously

Regarding head gasket, take an oil sample and send it to Blackstone for analysis. They'll send you the test kit for free, and the analysis only costs $28. It will tell you definitively whether there is any coolant in your oil without having to guess about whether you're imagining white smoke.

I was driving home from work last week, noticed a terrible burning smell and this is what I found:

Squirrels love that area under the manifold.
Had one try to move into mine a couple years ago.

Welp, time to look for chewed wires. Good hunting.
