Anyone else smell rubber?

I picked up the car today. Its all dirty now, full of bugs and shit on the windshield and the grill. I drove it at night GG :(

But yea, I smell rubber underneeth the hood. Is that normal? It seems like some rubber is burning.

Is that a typical new car engine smell?

you do smell the engine breaking in within the first 20 miles, but rubber is very distinct. are you sure it's not the engine?

The smell is coming from the engine area (under the hood). I havent driven a stick shift in a while, so usually I get the engine to rev at around 1500 - 2000 rpm the first couple of times I tried to move in 1st gear.

I smelt that too within the first 30 or so miles. It's gone now. I'm at 250.

Yes I did smell burnt rubber the first few miles. I thought it was my brakes stuck, or my clutch burnt. My salesrep said it's the cat converter and normally happens the first few miles. It's almost gone now with 100~ miles.

Thanks guys. Hopefully this will go away for me soon. I was just worried cuz I think I might have been slipping on the clutch.

But man... this car handles great! It turns and goes where you want it to go.

I smelled rubber from the engine bay for the first 50 or so miles, now it mainly comes from the rear tire area:iono:

The detailer may have used silicone to spray the engine bay to make everything look shiny.

Most likely the cat. Happens every time u install a new cat...

I smelled it too. It's a nasty acrid burnt smell. Typical. It will burn off in about 50 miles.

ngabdala 08-21-2012 12:27 AM

It's the cat. I had the same issue.
