No it's not. A placebo by definition is designed to have no measurable effect by itself, with any actual physical effect coming from suggestion rather than through physical means.

My exhaust is measurably louder and has an objectively different tone. Unlike a placebo, it's designed to have a physical effect on the driver's eardrums. The accompanying psychological effect comes through a direct physical manipulation. We're not imagining that difference in sound from a suggestion that it sounded different.

A placebo effect would arise from having someone replace your stock exhaust with another stock exhaust exactly like it and believing it made your car faster. We don't believe our cars are faster. We know they aren't. It can't be a placebo effect if we don't believe it's working.

Even if we did, it still wouldn't be placebo. It would be confirmation bias. But that's not happening here either.

"Sound is an important factor in the way a car seems to respond. A great sounding car will feel faster" Right here. That, "...feel faster...", that's all placebo.Sounds also has nothing to do with the way the car responds. Again, placebo.

I had UEL headers and a protune on for a long time. I loved it, felt like the car booked and sounded good doing so.
I had the recall done, blown engine, etc.
Went back to completely stock including the tune - car felt just as fast and I enjoyed it even more.

If you do not go forced induction, I wouldn't try squeezing every little bit of power out. Just do what you want for sound and enjoy the car otherwise. I definitely recommend a tune no matter what though, that's where you'll see the most benefit.

It's not. That's not what placebo means.

You're thinking of confirmation bias, which is superficially similar to placebo but isn't the same thing. Like I said above, we don't have confirmation bias either, because we accept the reality of the situation.

The intake noise from my Jeep is awesome. I have a cowl intake that pipes intake noise into the cabin as a completely unintended side effect, and I laugh every time I put my foot in it.

I don't care for the intake noise from the FA20. I was more than happy to plug the cabin intake noise port and enjoy the sound from the exhaust instead.

You do. I do. Many do.
There is still a shitload of people that will not accept for one second that their catback exhaust didn't make the car faster, more responsive, have better low end/high end/mid range torque no matter what evidence is put in front of them. They indeed have confirmation bias going on.

I got an axleback because I like the sound. I was informed quickly that I missed out on much powers.

Yeah same here on the intake noise on the FA20. For some reason it just doesn't sound that good.

The 2017+ engines have a smoother sound than the older ones.

"$1300 in the exhaust from header to tailpipe. Banks Torque Tubes, Magnaflow cat, Gibson muffler and ceramic coating at Swain." (Cheap by our Subaru standards, right?)

"Fuck that! I got my header off Ebay for $100 and my Flowmaster for $80. You just wasted a shitload of money!"

And your Jeep sounds like a lawnmower. Enjoy that drone.

That's why the simple answer is "headers." I generally don't throw price around with mods. If they REALLY want to replicate it, they will do the research and find out on their own, research some more, realize "yup, that's the price... <sticker shock>.... but that sound though..... yeah.... <convincing themselves it's unique and adds value>.... okay... time to money up."

That's where I'm at right now. Stock exhaust on my S2K is... quiet. I need to attend some meets this summer and try to hear some exhausts in person. I generally like anything that comes out of Tomei, but the drone on this car is similar to e-bay brands... I want to be able to hear a difference from the cockpit, which is pretty isolated compared to the exterior. But, since it's a summer car, maybe I can write off the drone and just deal with it since, I'm the only one driving most 99% of the time.

Header & tune, you'll feel for 5 mins.....
I installed a Gruppe-S UEL with OFT. After 5 mins of driving, then I could not feel it anymore.
I also have a Yonaka catback & K&N filter.
I like the sound.
Horrible drone at 1,000rpm, just on statup.
About 1200$ CDN, so after this week in markets, about 500$ US.
Actually, I don't like the sound, I love it!
