They should just stop paying out insurance if the rider wasn't wearing a helmet.

Now, that's an interesting concept -

Actually we haven't gotten past that. Most states with helmet laws are constantly fighting the anti-helmet, live free, crash, then die folks.

I personally have never ridden without a helmet, even if just moving a motorcycle around a parking lot, but there's a large contingent of riders that feel differently.

Same with seat belts. I've never not worn one, even before it was the law.

As the Bell helmet ads used to say "If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet". I'll let you figure out what that says about someone that doesn't want to wear one.

Now that said, I'm a little conflicted on whether it should be mandated by law.

i've always been a little conflicted about motorcycle helmets. all the first responders i've known have always referred to them as 'brain buckets', not for safety, but because it's where they physically put the pieces at accident scenes.

i get the low speed safety aspect, but it seems it's a minority event if a motorcycle is on the receiving end...

but i also refuse to ride motorcycles because of too many stories of other drivers absentmindedly driving through riders...

Welp, back when I was a 12-14 year old, back on the farm, my uncle gave me a hand me down Cushman motor scooter his kids had outgrown. Just about every summer evening, I would fire that machine up and ride around on the county roads.

T-shirt, shorts, tenna-shoes, no gloves and NO HELMET and no license. Yep, I survived to tell the tale ..... with only minor brain damage - :mad0259:

My friend had a car pull a left in front of him going what I would guess was around 50-60 mph knowing him. By my understanding he basically landed on his head, but no head damage whatsoever. Well, his head was somewhat "damaged" to begin with, but you know what I mean. Still recovering from the other wrist/ankle injuries about 9 months later, but could have been a lot worse.

His gear included full face helmet, riding pants, jacket, gloves and boots. No skin injuries either.

Motorcycle helmets do not constrict your vision at all and are actually pretty nicely vented, no reason not to wear one other than being an idiot. The greater the coverage the more protected you are of course. Little hard hat caps aren't going to protect you against the most common injuries to the front and side.

My other friend watched a guy crack his head open on a curb in a parking lot. Then proceeded to call 911 when he didn't get up. No helmet.

Yeap, helmets save lives, we have always needed to wear helmets here in AU, well ever since I got my license in 1980 anyway.

I feel it's the rebel without a clue bunch that advocate not wearing a helmet, because they are to cool, or it will mess up their perm...

I've "used" my helmet in a few offs over the years, if I wasn't wearing I would be either dumber than what I currently am....yes it is possible, or dead.

I am also a advocate for full face helmets, I worked in a few hospitals years ago, and seen what gutters, gravel and other hard grindy objects do the soft flesh and bones of the face.

I'm not a saint though, I do occasionally only wear a t shirt and jeans to cover my body, I do always wear gloves, boots, or purpose built riding shoes.

My latest set of casual riding shoes are Dainese Street Biker.

Correct. I have always worn a full-face helmet, and there is no restriction of vision. The last one I purchased had a slide down clear and tinted face mask, as well as bluetooth. (yes, I could answer my phone while riding).

As far as traffic, the issue is primarily in areas of heavy, fast traffic such as suburbia.

Downtown traffic is usually not an issue because everyone is moving moderately slow. Divided highway traffic you are mostly all going the same way. Rural traffic about the same. You just have to remember that no matter how loud your bike is or how brightly you are dressed (neither make a real difference) you are riding around with an invisibility cloak on and have to assume no one else sees you or cares about you.

You know, pretty much just like driving a car these days.

Welp, ma-ma and pa-pa's summer camp was open again today. Social distancing and hand washing was enforced but mask wearing was not required.

The 4-ager spent most of the day in the pool, the young teenager spent most of the day gazing into an i-pad and the pre-teen ager spent most of the day sleeping - :iono:

Ma-ma supervised the deck party and pa-pa ventured out to buy some pool chemicals - then, after I returned, I discovered where I stored them from last year - :bonk: (I'm gonna hafta start making maps of where stuff is).

Take it easy, now. Just because you are feeling better, doesn't mean you can jump up and chop a cord of wood! - :eyebulge:
