Over fill oil
I just bought my 86 secondhand from a stealership and when I got home about (120kms of driving )decided to check the oil, it was over filled to the curve of the dipstick.
I drained the oil next day which came to nearly 2L. Is there anything I should check to see if there was any damage? |
Unless its pissing oil from the crank seals and blowing smoke out the tail pipes, you're fine, relax.

Yep. What RZN said.
If it caused an issue you would know without doubt by now. |
I checked today no oil in air intake, removed skidplate no gaskets underneath are blown or weeping.
The exhausts do look oily so ive cleaned them and will check again. Only thing I noticed is a rough idle/misfire when cold according to the obd it isn't misfiring? |

The very first 30ish seconds of engine operation, it runs rough because it's in low vacuum operation, it's running with the throttle plate open and de-timed as fuk to stop oil consumption on startup. Try this: before you start it, pump the brakes to deplete the vacuum in the booster, once it starts notice the lack of vacuum as the brake pedal remains stiff as wood. After 30ish seconds, you'll notice the sound change and the brake pedal will sink as the booster gets vacuum again.
This doesn't work for an automatic car though, as it uses a mechanical vacuum pump. |
Is it normal for it to burn oil...im not seeing blue smoke out of the exhaust but im down to half a dipstick.
|
over how long of a distance?
what do you mean by half a dipstick? it started out at the top of the hash marks @ operating temp, and is now measuring at halfway between them @ operating temp? |
Dude. You are way, way, way, overthinking this.
You are fine. The car is fine. Every and all internal combustion engines, from old ass to off the factory 2020 engine do burn a curtain amount of oil. Newer engines burns less due to better technology. So again your car is fine. |

Checking both when stone cold was at the top on the low side now its half way down. |
Being a flat engine, cylinder walls tend to gather more oil than an engine with vertical cylinders, that is why break-in is very important on a flat engine to avoid oil consumption later on in life, a well broken in engine will be fine and not burn oil, and not-well broken in engine will also be fine, but burn oil all of it's life.
But .5L over 3000km on a subaru is acceptable consumption. |
sounds about normal to me.
|
After changing to Toyota factory oil 0w-20, its no longer burning oil.
