My post was aimed at only one unique 86 with an incurable defect, the OP's #1 car, not the universe of the series.

Whether that defect (voided warranty) was caused by a tune or something else, nobody knows or will say. It could've been much more and as we know, Carfax is in too many cases useless.

I'd never buy any car with a voided warranty and that one left 1-2 years and 40k+ miles of drivetrain warranty on the table.

Another red flag the OP described is that the car had already been through auction then bought by a Toyota dealer. Their auction gypsy probably made a mistake in due diligence then it spiraled into an unethical situation when the dealer represented the car as certified, required for an Extra Care extended warranty. Bad dealer.

I thought the OP was courageous to be as forthcoming in so many ways. He could put a cherry on top by posting the VIN and selling dealer so others will be alerted to do their research carefully. You really shouldn't expect a franchised Toyota dealer to do business that way.

Anyway, if you ever decide to sell your ZL1, I'm interested if the warranty is still intact!

Sorry to necro here but I just wanted to give thanks again to everyone and provide some cloture if anyone was interested!

I actually did call out the VIN on every possible review outlet. I also complained to Toyota of America (who sided with me in regards to the dealer's poor practice). What they did, misrepresenting the car initially to draw me in, was very skeezy at best and possibly illegal at worst.

Worse yet, they responded trying to defend themselves on a dealer review site. Needless to say, I won't be going back.

As I mentioned before, I ended up overpaying slightly for a clean '19 6MT GT that was previously owned by Toyota. It's Halo white, which is really what I wanted to match my NB1 :). It does have the TRD catback, which I have mixed feelings about. The dealer has been unresponsive in regards to me obtaining the window sticker, and the entire process was hell. If I could have done it again, I would have gotten power of attorney to get my money back so I could have stayed in budget. Lessons learned. Hey, I'm young! Haha.

Yes, I will eventually want to do the mods that the previous car has to my vehicle. However, I'll have the peace of mind knowing that they were done properly and the car is learned and tuned incrementally to my liking.

For now, I've done a DIY rear seat delete (pics coming soon!) and shaved a total of ~65 pounds off the car. Next are tires, wheels, springs, sway bars, and other light mods as I learn the chassis and improve my abilities.

Eventually, I will opt for EL headers and an OFT. I will need to form a good relationship with a local dealer before touching anything that could void my warranty, and, as such, will wait until around 56k to do so! For now, I am at peace and in love with the platform. It is quiet, obedient, responsive, and - most of all - balanced. Here's hoping the GR86 sticks to tradition and compliments our cars nicely!
