Trunk creaking

Hello guys,

I've had this trunk rattle for over a year now, and simply cannot find how to solve it -which took a hefty toll on my mental health :bonk:-. Here's what I can tell about it:

-Creaking / clicking noise, that seems to happen over low-intensity road undulations / irregularities, especially over 30mph. Not over bigger bumps.
-Definitely coming from inside the trunk (more present with rear seats down)
-Not linked to the rear seat latch (see above)
-Not an issue with the trunk release or the trunklid seal (can be heard with trunk open)
-Not linked to gas cap release cable (now firmly held in place)
-Not coming from under-trunk accessories (have been double-sided-taped and not moving anymore)
-Not the metal tab thing
-Not the trunk foam clips
-Not this, unless I did not apply enough WD40

Did anyone else experience this? How did you solve it?

Thanks!
Alex

I used to hear a ticking/clicking kinda sound from the trunk area when I first got my car. It has disappeared over time or I've become accustomed to it... Or the car has settled down as the miles have increased..

Well the car has 50 000+ miles so I don't expect this noise to go away anytime soon..

Well, no, but if I did and I had tried all the things you have tried, I would take the trunk lid off the car and see if the sound goes away. That should help isolate where the sound is coming from.

Could it be the CHMSL rattle? (Center High Mounted Stop Light aka the spaceship in the rear view mirror.) I solved that rattle with some glue on the internal parts.

It's a gift.

If the OP takes on @humfrz advice to remove the trunk lid, then it should be done when it's raining as a bit of moisture in the trunk may help.. some expansion can help the interfaces...

Oh god I hope it's not that, that looks awfully complicated to remove. It doubt it is, though, as the noise gets louder when the rear seat is down, which indicates the noise is coming from the cargo area.

Well all jokes aside, it seems to be more present in dry weather. I already tried driving with the boot cracked open and the noise didn't change, so it ain't that.

Take a look at the wiring on the trunk lid. I suspect mine was the plate lighting.
