Best legal exhaust options in california
I’ve been looking through this site and can’t seem to find anything reticent enough to make a decision on buying a catback for my car.
I have a 2018 gt86 and I want to/ should have pulled my finger on the trigger already for a catback. Does anyone have any good choices for a good catback exhaust system that isn’t California illegal and that also doesn’t sound like a tin can with fart |
Best catback and have money to burn?

Stock. :D
But in all seriousness I wouldn’t think a Catback exhaust would be illegal unless it’s ridiculously loud, the issue is removing the cats that make it illegal. Seeing it’s a Catback it should be all good. I have an STI axle back, happy with the sound and looks good IMO. There isn’t much to be gained between either an axle back or Catback powerwise I would of thought, so if you’re just after looks and sound, maybe an axle back is good enough and you save some $$$ too. If you’re after more power, a header and a tune is the way to go but then it would likely be illegal. Invidia Q300 Catback is a pretty good choice IMO. https://youtu.be/TwEQ6Q1SF-o STI axle back https://youtu.be/k40J9r1IsWQ |
Catbacks don't require CARB certification; as long as your system does not exceed 95dB, you should be okay.
Are you looking for just sound, or do you want something that's lightweight? |
Hi and Welcome!
CSG Touring 86 Exhaust Low key, neighbor friendly, throaty, mature tone, functional, smart, laguna seca compliant (<93db) Cops leave me alone even if they follow. Can't cite you for sound as it is under DB limit. GL! |
I like my Corsa. If you're planning on keeping the rest of the exhaust stock (You have to to stay legal in CA) it's great. It's kind of heavy compared to other aftermarket options, but it's still lighter than stock and I think it sounds the best of any catback. Some people say it's too loud, some say it's too quiet. I'll say either depending on the situation, which means it's probably about perfect for a sporty exhaust.

I am totally still in love with my Perrin 2.5' catback. Perfect blend of aggressive sound but still fairly reserved.

tunable Supertrapp

Maybe the TRD catback would suit you?

I've had no issues with my Perrin 2.5" resonated. It's throaty and not loud at all. I've had plenty of cops pull up next to me to hear me take off, waiting for that BROP BROP sound that means $$$ in ticket revenue. (knock wood) Lucky so far...

Sorry guys, I’m new to this page so idk how to reply to single people. But a lot of great suggestions. I’m just looking for a good sounding catback/axle back that isn’t over the dbl limit but still looks and performs good under 1k
|
Under 1K? C'mon, that's not the best. ;)

I just bought a catback off CL that someone made by welding in straight pipes after the resonator. It was cheap enough to give it a try and I love it. It sounds deep and burbly, but no drone at daily driving rpms. I'm sure a muffler shop could make the same thing for like $200.
