TTAC Track Days Episode 2: Scion FR-S vs. Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T vs. Mazda MX-5

Having owned a 2010 PRHT Miata Sport and now the Subaru BRZ I don't agree with the video. The Miata is a great car but in stock form the suspension is scary when driven fast.

Stopped reading TTAC after they decided to go political. What does it say?
There is no way to mount a roll bar in a PRHT MX5, and I don't trust that roof w/o one. That was the end of my consideration of PRHT.

You can mount a roll bar even with the PRHT but it's not cheap.

Options I ran into were prohibitevely expensive. Post #5 here pretty much sums it up.

I really didn't like that guy. Many of his points seemed conflicting and I couldn't take him seriously.

He says it doesn't have enough power then gets into an mx-5 ( a slower car) and doesn't say anything about power.

He says it has too much grip and complains about it being too hard to slide despite every other driver having an easy time sliding it.

He likes the turn in but mentions nothing about the steering and balance/feel or anything regarding throttle input. Hell, most of the stuff he talks about is very shallow. No technical comments like we would expect from a driver like Chris Harris or Randy Pobst.

This guy is a pretty poor reviewer. Also, nasally voice.

Road and track did a MUCH more in depth article and test as this guy and found pretty much the exact opposite.

Don't know why but to me he sounds like one of those shamwow infomercials.

That guy has a face for radio and a voice for torture. The Miata looks like its about to tip over in the corners vs the other two and he's going on an on about it?!

I'd like to see the Shamwow/Schticky guy do a car review. I wish Billy Mays would have done a car review infomercial style before you passed.

sigh... I miss Billy Mays.

If you look at his comment he actually likes body roll... no shit.

He said it makes it more exciting... and that he wants to know the weight is being transfer to the proper wheels.

I am not making this up.

It looks as though they drove the auto in some of the cuts, but I'm not too sure.

However I'm sure TTAC conclusion is what 95-99% of people looking at these cars will think; mention the V6 Mustang and it'll be even worse. There is some stiff competition here, driving "feel" and "handling" alone are very hard things to sell cars on.

I think the point he was implying was that the chassis was too good, and that more power was needed to exploit that. Again I think most people would probably agree. And what the more critical reviews tend to say. Are they right? Maybe, but then you're out of the realm of affordable sports cars.

I think it was interesting what he said about the Miata being more "raw" compared to even the FR-S. Raw being a euphemism for impractical. And that's the thing...the FR-S is just practical enough and it sounds like for a track car the reviewer preferred the Miata in part because of that; irrational or not.

TTAC has had a constant barrage of articles hating on the fr-s. at least they drove this time, their past articles have been about how it doesn't live up to the hype, but the author hadn't even driven the car. It's obvious that they decided they didn't like the car before ever driving it and threw all objectivity out the window. Following the development of this car has really made me appreciate how terrible most auto journalism is.

Are they saying that it is easier to make the rear step out in a Miata because it rolls so much, decreasing grip? I could probably agree to that. In my first autox in an NC few years ago I spun on the first run and had to countersteer a couple of times on subsequent runs.

I have only one autox event in a BRZ so far. I did it on stock tires with TC/VSC off and I don't think I even had to countersteer once. The lot was pretty spooky though, with little run-off in many places so I didn't feel comfortable pushing.

If this is what passes as paid automotive journalism I need a career change.

Hiring process at TTAC:

Candidate: "Hello Mr hiring manager, I have limited experience being on camera and extremely limited automotive knowledge but I know how to type!"

Hiring manger: "When can you start?!"

So, not fast enough and the brakes aren't very good. Handling is good, but not excellent when compared to the rivals.

Sounds about right.

^^^ This review is more spot-on than off-the-rocker. Anyone who sees it oppositely is hypnotized.
