Fuel Pump/ Fuel Filter at 75k
 

Hey,

I know we have multiple threads and DIYs about this topic but I wanted to ask some general questions and look for advice. So my car is stock and at about 85k, 10k past the recommended fuel pump replacement. I've been running chevron 91 almost exclusively over the last 6+ years.

First question is how necessary is it to replace the fuel pump at 75k, has anyone replaced it and noticed it gunked up or needing replacing after getting in there?

What fuel pump/filter do people recommend as a replacement for the oem one? I found this one on rockauto for $338. I also called a local dealer just to see what craziness they charge for a fuel pump and they quoted me $600something for the part (and $900 for a fuel pump replacement job:confused0068:) So if anyone has a recommendation for a quality replacement fuel pump/filter for a stock car that won't destroy my bank account I would be very grateful.

Also any tips on the procedure, I went through multiple DIY threads on the topic and watched a few videos but any general advice from someone who did the job would be more than welcome.

Any other general advice or tips on the topic would also be handy.

Yes this is correct. If you check your maintenance and warranty guide it shows R for the fuel filter (the fuel filter is inside the fuel pump). As far as I can tell from looking around you can't just buy a fuel filter and considering the PITA the job seems, might as well just replace the fuel pump as well. I've only found link to the whole assembly of the fuel canister as a replacement part.

There is one not so great FT86speed factory video and in it the guy just replaces the fuel pump, I was unable to find the proper pump or fuel filter.

I still haven't done mine (172k miles). I don't think there's a great option beyond replacing the whole thing so until I have problems I'm just gonna leave it

Yeah I talked to my FRS guy and he said that you can't just change the filter since its all in the fuel canister. He also said that the part in the maintenance and warranty guide is a mistake since the fuel filter it self is not a serviceable part. Makes sense, I was confused why I couldn't just get a new filter and replace that inside the fuel canister.(can't find a fuel filter replacement) I may consider getting the pump replaced around the 120k-150k mark. But no harm in letting the part live its full life and just replace when the engine appears to not be getting enough fuel flow.

I have a 20 year old Toyota, still on factory pump and filter. The maintenance guide is crazy.

I wouldn't worry about the fuel filter. I asked Toyota when I brought my car in for the major services around 70k miles. I had plugs done, tranny fluid, and brake fluid. I think that was it. I asked about the fuel filter and they actually kinda pushed it off which was surprising. I believe the cost for fuel filter replacement is very expensive since the fuel tank needs to be dropped. IMO, I would never replace this unless specifically having issues. The maintenance cost doesn't justify it.

Fuel tank does not need to be dropped. The process to do this is not that bad, it seems to be on the same PITA level as spark plugs.

Note this is a terrible how to video but gives you the idea of how to get at the fuel pump. (Filter is apart of the pump but is not serviceable by itself, entire pump/ canister needs to be replaced from what I understand). The canister alone cost anywhere between $350-600 depending if you get oem or not.

I've also got around 175K on my stock pump and it has recently started making a high pitch whine. I know it's the tank pump because I wired in a kill switch and it stops whining when I kill the power.

My plan is to find a used pump on ebay and replace the strainer (fuel filter) while i'm in there with the deatschwerks install kit PN: 9-1010. This includes a new strainer, adapter pigtail (not needed for stock pump) and some o-rings. You will need to follow the FT86SF install video to cut the retainer clip off the old strainer assembly.
