Rattling noise under the hood while engine is off
Hi All,
New 86 owner here, bought a Black 2017 86 used w/ 27,000 miles on it from a dealer 2 weeks ago in Fort Worth, TX. Dealer said there were no mechanical issues w/ the car ever but that it was a salvage title bc the front of the car had been in a fender bender. I have a 12 month warranty on the car. After driving on the highway and turning off the engine I have heard rattling under the hood multiple times. It lasts for 15 minutes or so. What is causing this, and should I be concerned? Video link below is a recording of the sound: https://youtu.be/d7ofbDKPeFw Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you all. |
That is the sound of the engine cooling down. The metals are simply cooling down and contracting after being hot.
All cars do this every time you turn them off if they've been running for a while. |

It was crazy when I was a kid. A car would turn off, and it sounded like you were driving on a pebble road with how many "ding!" sounds I heard. I used to think all the rocks and small debris would collect in the bottom of the car while driving, and it would 'release' when parked. |
