Engine pinging (rattle noise) under acceleration

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone else here is hearing or getting engine ping with their brand new 86's.

I started to hear my motor pinging at about 850kms and initially thought it was a bad batch of fuel and coincidentally I had less than 1/4 of a tank to go and figured I'll swap over to V power to see if it was a bad batch of bp ultimate but it turned out that fuel wasn't the case.

The pinging occurs intermittently between 2000 to 3000rpm when you have no load on the throttle and apply throttle loading. I think it has happened a few times over 3000rpm for me. I've been able to replicate the ping in all gears besides first gear with anywhere of full load on the accelerator/throttle to even as low as 10% loading on the throttle with 5th gear being the easiest to replicate as your pretty much sitting in that rev range when your on the hume hwy at 70km/h.

I took the car over to the service center as I was booked in for the first service on Friday and advise them about the issue as well and if they can take a look at it. They went for a long test drive and didn't hear anything at first (typical) but then the foreman jumped in the car with me and I managed to get the motor to ping with him in the car.
After a few talks in the car as he didn't think it was pinging, he drove the car again and finally we were both on the same page and the diagnose is that it was definitely pinging.

We then took the dealerships demo car out and replicated the issue on it as well and I also manage to meet up with one of my mates with his blue 86 who also have the ping as well.

I was advise by the service advisor to place some octane booster for now to see if it helps but no joy at all over the weekend and so I made the call this morning to inform him of the results and he told me that they tried some of the other 86's they had at the dealer since then and they all have the ping and have inform toyota australia of the issue.

Is anyone else experiencing engine ping?

Its sad to have such an issue with a brand new car which I have been waiting for a while for now :(:(:(:(

Please keep us advised on the progress with this issue, hopefully its not too serious or else easily rectified.

I'm at 600kms. can't say I've noticed anything. will check it out tonight. btw been running the 98 stuff from caltex

Sounds like it's happening as the DI cuts out... Kind of weird to see it on bp98 when no yanks have reported on it. Wonder what Toyota response to this will be.

Damn this seems different from the DI pump chirping issue and quite scary considering a number of cars from the dealer have the same pinging. With 7 years of development you'd think they would have ironed out issues like this.

Keep us informed pls.

I'm also quite curious to see if @kharn83 has the same issue or not as the way he describes it is pretty much the same?

Almost every NA Subaru pings on Australian fuel. Most owners (like dealership mechanics) just don't realise.

Try some United Premium 100 and hold tight for tuning options other than ecutek.

Any dealership "fix" is likely to be a massive detune, something this car cannot afford.

so it's the engine and nothing to do with transmission, right? have you tried it on both manual and auto? I don't know much about engines, not sure if transmission would have anything to do with it..:iono:

Hmmm, got around 2400kms on the clock and haven't noticed any pinging sounds. Been using BP Ultimate 98 the whole time if that matters... I'll check it out more thoroughly tonight.

How noisy is the pinging? Any chance you could get an audio clip of that noise? I usually terrible at discerning noises haha >.>

sho 08-05-2012 10:47 PM

I did try to get some sound clips but its not loud enough to hear from the clips

If you have music on, then you most likely won't hear it at all. Busy road, maybe not as well unless you really know what your listening in for I guess.
the loudest I've heard it will be in 5th gear where its really noticeable for me anyways. A quiet road would be easiest to listen for it in 5th.

@davey90 I haven't tired it on auto and not sure which models the dealership has as I am only aware of one vehicle they have which was a manual but it shouldn't matter of the transmission

It's not a gearbox issue. You notice it most in 5th because the engine load is higher. It will be even worse in 6th, if you could hear it.

This may sound like a silly question, but does it also occur when you're "up it", or just when you're cruising and then squeeze the throttle?

nix 08-05-2012 10:52 PM

What's the easiest way to replicate it? It's only when you step on the pedal from 0 throttle?

That's crazy.. but I never heard of any NA Subaru's pinging before? did Subaru do something about their NA pinging?

I wonder if 100ron will be bad for the car though as its E10?

cruising or anything
sometimes even when you change gears and you just happen to be within that rev range and as soon as you apply throttle after the gear change you hear it as well

if you giving a good loading like shifting at 5k rpm and next gear change means it will be above 3krpm, then there's no ping
or even if your revs are below 2000, no ping as well
