1280kg much more than I expected-wished, but its not bad for that amount of power. Better than BRZ :) Very exciting car really.

StraightOuttaCanadaEh 01-10-2020 09:47 AM

It looks like 1. you sit too high, which is a problem with a lot of small hatchbacks. 2. and the visibility is not too good, definitely not as good as in an 86 and that's a problem.

Ugh it's so incredibly blah....I love it.

For comparison, that's about the price the older 2015 BRZ tS cost in Japan. Seems reasonable. We're almost certain not to get it here, but I will daydream about it for the rest of the day.

Something tells me I’ll never see a new 2800lb awd manual car come to the US. So, I’ll be able to import this about the time I retire. You guys over yonder keep one in decent condition for me!

korhun 01-10-2020 11:29 AM

I've always wanted to to do this :)

Let me know which colour, whether you would like the 'track' spec. You can send over a holding deposit, I can use it for the next 25yrs before shipping over to you... I'll look after it as if it's my own..

I would seriously consider trading the FRS for this, hot damn.

Civic Type R is real close for me, but this is 300# lighter and less practical so I'm in.

I am thinking the same... Toyota GB won't give me any idea as to when the UK order books open.. They keep telling me to keep an eye on their blog!!! I don't have the time to keep checking their fucking blog.. I just want them to take my name down as a "person of interest".. But they won't!!

Yeah I hated trying to get a fucking dealership to sell me a car, literally the worst part about my FRS was trying to buy it, thanks for reminding me, the pain faded after 6 years.

But I think I could hold out for at least the second model year assuming there would be one. Ugh, why am I infected with lust for unicorns?

I wonder if anyone working for Toyota visits this Forum.. They would learn so much, get to understand how "normal" folk function, how they use their cars and buying experiences.

AWD, turbo, 2+2 seating, modern safety and chassis rigidity, a hatchback, all for 50# more than an FRZ? I'm fucking impressed.

The powertrain is where I'm worried, I wouldn't hate something FWD biased, but without some LSD it will be a hot mess trying to drive it at 10/10ths. I'm hoping that 270hp is stout and reliable, they're wringing a lot out of a tiny engine.

On paper executed right this thing is brilliant, but it could easily be a dud. Hell all the >$30k super hatches have weak spots, shit is not easy on a budget.

why? 01-11-2020 12:20 PM

While I doubt this would ever come to the USA, I wish it would so I could buy it.

Toyota doesn't even sell the real Yaris here, already confirmed not for US shores, does seem like EU is getting it though.

I'm reading that the 'track' pack will come with 2 LSDs.. I think it's going to be a real cracker!!

That's not that big a deal, the Yaris is only a hatch in most of the world, the sedan is a totally different model. They play fast and loose with car names all the time.

But I agree that the chance of it coming to the USA are near zero.

I don't think you understand, the US 'Yaris' is a rebadged Mazda2, they'd have to do all the safety and emissions testing from scratch to get the actual Yaris onto showroom floors and they wouldn't sell any of them, nor would they expect to jacking up the price into a death spiral of even fewer people lining up to buy them. I'd bet they'd lose money on these things which means an even shittier dealership experience contributing further to the death spiral.

Or Toyota could prove me wrong, I'll put $36k on the line after a test drive.

Can't wait to import one in 25 years

If there is enough interest, I can buy say a dozen, stick them in a storage unit for 25yrs.. Just think about what they'll be worth in 25yrs with only delivery mileage.

Any takers??

I think that came later. We have had the Echo here and Yaris for a while. When pictures of the Echo hatchback hit the US, interest led to Toyota bringing the compact hatch here under the Yaris badge. My ex had a red Yaris sedan back in 2008. It was a real POS in quality. It made the Corolla feel luxury.

I get the general interest in this version. It is essentially a light weight WRX or something built on a tin can chassis, so it is light, but having driven my ex’s Yaris, I am very skeptical about the quality.

Wut

The current US car called a Yaris is a Mazda2, the rest of the world gets a TNG based car that is leaps and bounds higher quality than what Toyota shitboxes were even five years ago.

You are literally comparing a car from 2008 to a car from 2020, that's like saying the latest mustang is crap because the SN95s were crap, literally skipping a whole generation of development, or C6 Corvettes vs C4, or CRX vs CVCC.

IDGAF how bad the car was 10+ years ago, and if you're smart you shouldn't either.

Also I think shitboxes are fun and I'll take a Toyota built interior on a TNG over any Subaru interior I've experienced.

I don't understand how one can compare a similarly named vehicle from 12 years ago with a modern car.

it's available with 2 torsens and can put 100% of the power to the rears. sport mode sends 70% to the rear by default. track mode puts it in 50/50. It sounds wonderful!

Cars can evolve over time, but they generally stay in the same class. This is a class (not just size) lower than the Corolla just like a Honda Fit is lower than a Civic. The quality will be proportionally lower today than as it was in 2008. Maybe they can polish a turd enough to make it nice, but generally speaking, that doesn’t happen.

Some people don’t mind that a $25k Mustang shares so much with an $80k Mustang GT500. In that sense, maybe they can make the Yaris be bad ass, but some will always notice that they shined up a turd and see what’s lacking. I shined up my BRZ, so who knows, even I could eat my words about this Yaris.

I guessing we have differing views on what constitutes a turd. (And no, I'm not going to post a picture of what I dropped in the bowl this morning lol)
I've posted before about what a great car I think mum's 2013 Yaris is. Yeah, the interior is low rent but it doesn't squeak and nothing has fallen off. I think it fulfills its purpose well especially given it cost $17k new.

I actually like the turd.

jflogerzi 01-11-2020 09:59 PM

Come on Toyota bring this to the states! I like the style and Interior. But we need a replacement for the little ST from Ford. But I don't think I would trade my FRS. I wonder what corn juice would do for this motor :)
