Ended up having to part with my 2013 FRS back in 2015. I’m happy to say I am back in the family with a 2019 86 TRD Special Edition!

Oh shit been waiting for this one. Was it “cheap”? :D

ApoNono 12-12-2019 06:55 AM

3300 miles on it at a Toyota dealer for 26k. Super clean, almost like new condition

I will take a pic when the sun comes up for proof

How has the front bumper grown on you? I still prefer the FR-S bumper. The 86 looks like a weird catfish to me.

You picked an awesome version of the 86, welcome back to the family! [emoji106]
What are your impressions of the 2019 TRD compared to your 2013 FR-S?

I am not sure what I would have thought about it without the TRD spec. I am loving the more aggressive look from that standpoint BUT I will no longer be able to unsee the catfish

I will caveat this reply with; I was driving a RAV4 since I gave up the FR-S so my point of reference for what I remember about driving it and comparing it to the 2019 TRD might be a little off.

My initial impression during the test drive, and is holding true over the last 2 days, is that the stability of the car overall feels a lot better. Gear change feels a lot smoother too after I dusted off my manual skills (which have never been great, to begin with) off.

The upgraded brakes and larger tires are pretty amazing - This thing is stopping on a dime and feels very in control of its size/speed. I was also surprised by how much meaner it sounds with the upgraded exhaust as well.

Creature comforts are way better than the 2013 FR-S. It's the small cabin things that I am loving over the FR-S. Push-button start, keyless entry, the additional acsents in the 2019 TRD... and it isn't badged as a Scion ;)

Overall I am extremely happy with the 2019 TRD. Before I found this one used with low miles on it I was about to pull the trigger on building out a 2020 86 GY TRD. The price felt right and I couldn't be happier. The dealer I purchased it from was also the original dealer that sold it to the original owner. The story I got was a couple bought it and then 2 months later got pregnant and traded it in for a used Highlander. It was sitting on their lot since July/August so it has been waiting for me ;)

Congrats you got a good deal. Welcome back. This has the PP breaks correct? Which dampers and does it come with trd springs already?

Thanks!
Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers. I am pretty sure it is the same stock springs and the non-special edition though.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the differences! I can imagine going from the RAV4 to a 86 is a big change! I would miss the pure simplicity of the FR-S, and I don’t really like the little digital screen tacked on the gauge cluster. There are so many little upgrades though I could overlook that. And ride quality should be better on a new 86.

I also think it’s very interesting the gear changes feel smoother. That is a really good sign for anyone that wants to go from a FR-S to a new 86. [emoji106]
