I purchased my 2015 FR-S brand new. I bought it with the intention to mod it, but ultimately stayed the 'responsible' course, the only purchase being a CAI. I'm finally ready to start spending.


I'm between;


- Modifying my paid-off, 5+ year, 60,000ish mile car, which has never given me any mechanical issues. Knock on wood


- Trade in my car toward a new 86 GT for sake of longevity and creature comforts and then modify.



- Wait a few more years in hopes of a drastic change in stock performance and design.


- Go all in and get the Supra. -error 404, option not found due to marriage-


What would you do?

What I would do (and have done) is do the light mods that make you happy and just leave the big stuff alone. Then wait it out and see what happens in the next couple of years.
Originally I planed to go FI and then when I drove the at a while decided there was no reason on earth I needed it.
Then since I pack miles on I was going to trade it for a newer model after 3 years. Now five years in and still with it.
Next I was going to trade it for a Green special edition. They could only get me an AT so no go.
Now I am going to just keep going and see what the second gen looks like. If I don't care for what they offer then the STi will soon be out on the new platform so I have options.

Go all in and get the Supra... if you don't mind AT.

Realistically speaking, don't see much you need to upgrade to new 86. As for waiting for the 2nd gen, I can't say much... but don't expect too much on it.

If the Supra came in manual, I'd say go all out on it. Nothing wrong with AT, I just like the engagement and joy of rowing my own. If no supra, cuz insurance costs, cost of ownership, ect., I say go all out with the FRS.

Buy a used early/mid 90's NSX http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/forumd...or-Sale-(Gen-1) and drive it until the 2nd gen 86 comes out. By then, there may be some second-hand A90's on the market, perhaps a manual transmission swap through https://www.eagsatx.com/ will be more commonplace. You can likely sell the NSX for the same price (assuming you don't go mod-crazy).

Agree with Tcoat. If you want to change small things (little more power, HU/sound, etc.), go for it. If you're thinking of big changes, you should consider other platforms.

Please post last 5 years of financial records. That way we can come up with an idea of what direction you should go.

What would I do. I would take the money you feel like spending and buy into stocks via a mutual fund. Meanwhile, I'd just drive the car as long as it was dependable and fit my needs.

Depends what you want out of the car and really what your financial situation is. Possibilities are endless with these cars so the only things stopping you is money and will really. What do you want out of it? Is it your only car? What’s your end goal?

I also planned to go FI and do the whole thing, but after just a year, I decided to just do the minimal mods. I wanted to trade in for a newer model, but that’s just more debt for a rear view camera, not worth it. Supra? If that’s your thing, then go for it. The BRZ is my daily so I wanted to keep it reliable more than anything. Do whatever makes you happy and don’t put yourself in a bad spot financially. Good luck

Having a second opinion on this... what is your current car lacking? Obviously zero car payment is a major bonus in my book. I totally understand what it's like to lightly mod your car into "the perfect car", and then 5-6 months later get an itch to un-tap new potential.


Honestly, I think your first mod should have been something like an OFT and tune-out the torque dip. CAI to me is a pointless mod on these cars because they're not HP monsters, and depending which CAI you buy, you're just creating headache in the ease-of-maintenance department. Headers and exhaust are a good next step after OFT (I personally love the UEL sound), but TIRES are often overlooked (not to be confused with bigger/wider wheels). I think if you go too wide a tire, you'll feel underpowered and throw off the balance that this car was designed for. I think Brembos are overkill on this platform. Big racing brakes that don't heat up under street driving are less effective than a normal OE brake pad.

I purchased mine brand new in 2013 so it's coming up on the 7 year mark. I knew I wanted to modify it as I ride a lot of motorcycles so I got the base model. I did little mods here and there. 4 months ago I did the big mod finally and added a turbocharger, just because I wanted a little more power after driving it stock for all those years and never experienced Forced Induction.



Feels like a different car after 3k RPM and I'm in love with it all over again. I figure that engines are cheap on this car because everyone is wrecking them or swapping them out. So if I blow one on the turbo I can swap in another one.


The newer models don't really have much that are worth it for me to trade in for. Maybe padded knee panels, BBK, dual climate control or leather seats.



I have 2 more mods left until I'm "done" which is Front Pipe/Overpipe and maybe SS brake lines. Then I can't gain more power stockwise unless I reinforce the engine/transmission and that's a lot more money.



So I'm just going to put money away in the future for a newer car. There isn't anything on the market right now that interests me (MX-5, Veloster N, Type-R, Mustang, WRX, GTI, etc). The WRX redesign coming up has me a bit curious but I won't buy a first year production car anymore until they get some bugs/kinks out. Plus, I save to get the "special editions" such as a TRD or STI type of model.



The Supra is nice, I don't have a negative opinion of it like most people saying it's basically a BMW. I just wish it had a manual.

It truly depends on what you are thinking. If you want fi, just buy another car. If you just want handling mods and easy na mods, then just go for it. Do lots of research, take your time, and make your own decision on parts. There are boatloads of parts meant for different people doing different things with this vehicle.

opinion: stay with the used one and mod it. i bought used for $15k and put a supercharger in for $6k. i feel terribly bad for the people driving a bone stock 86 that they paid $30k for.
