Perrin Engine Mount concerns (UPDATED)
Got the latest updated Perrin engine mounts and the engine sounds like it wants to jump out of the engine bay. There are a lot of thuds and vibrations at idle, very ugly sounding. Took it back to the mechanic to find out if one of them is loose and nope, he says he triple checked everything.
I did notice when the engine is warmed up the effect is less pronounced and right now it's routinely below freezing here in Toronto. It just so happened that my first drive with the mounts was when the car was warmed up and I remember thinking wow, this is not bad at all. So for those who have had this mount or any mounts installed, is it normal to have this much racket going on at idle? Do certain mods make it worse? I have the Perrin/Whiteline trans support and bushing combo, and Whiteline diff outrigger and subframe bushings. Is there a bit of a break in period? Do cold weather/rougher idle when engine is cold make this effect less pronounced? Is there any weight to the hearsay that Fluidamrp pulley mitigates the NVH? Thanks! UPDATE: okay after a long drive, I can confidently say the crazy knocking sound is caused by the rough cold idle. Once the engine is hot, there are no crazy noises, even at idle. The only problem so far is a nasty gurgling rasp that is noticeable on acceleration, especially from 3K rpm onwards, but that may be due to the trans support, as it seems to come from directly below the trans tunnel. I put my back seats up and that helped the noise and I have to say, noises aside, the effect is very nice. |
Subd. I wanted to buy these mounts and still plan on doing so. I think mounts do take a lil bit to break in.

I mean you’re daily driving with Perrin mounts in freezing weather.
They probably harden up in the cold and will shake the hell out of the engine. |
I have the STI Group N mounts (engine and transmission), temperature has touched 3c so far, no issues. I'm loving them.

I didn't realize your location. Being so cold, I think it makes more sense, especially since your chassis will also creak and vibrate more until it's warmed up. I know when I drive my car and it's -15F out, nothing sounds good.

@Joveen They're on almost every site that sells parts for our cars, they're just called STI mounts. I don't think there's any difference between " Group N" and "regular" STI mounts for our platform as far as I have seen.

I just confused when it said Sti vs Group N mounts. That's why thought these engine mounts were just sti and not group n.
