FT-86 may be comparable to... a Saturn Sky?
 

From the Miata, Mini Cooper and Z many comparisons have been made with this car. However, I predict that the FT-86's performance numbers will be close to the Saturn Sky (though it's been discontinued since 2009). Base model, 2.4L 170 hp, 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, 28 mpg. Also, if there was ever a turbo version in the cards, I think it would be similar to the Red Line version which did 0-60 in 5.5, and had a 2.0L engine. I wouldn't doubt the FT-86 to achieve the base's specs, but I do think it would get better mileage (around the 30 mpg range). I'm not sure if it was jointly developed with the Pontiac Solstice or Opel GT, but they look similar with almost the same specs. What do you think?

Actually there were Japanese magazines hinting at 0-62MPH(100KM) in 7 something. I think it depends on the weight. At 2400lb curb weight it would be capable of 0-62MPH in <6 seconds. But that is best case scenario.

The Sky was just a rebadged Pontiac Solstice anyway, both were heavy roadsters. The Solstice twins were closer in weight(2800lbs) and HP(240-260BHP) to the S2000.

The big difference is you'll be able to get parts for the FT-86 and not shafted by GM's bankrupt past. If the FT-86 has an interior remotely as crappy as the Sky/Solstice, it'll be game over for me. I hate those interiors; they're practically sponsored by Tupperware. :(

erm....parts are readily available for the Sky/Solstice. You can even buy complete drive and powertrains...It's no harder to get parts for them than any other recently-out-of-production vehicle.

Regardless of whether the individual brands have been folded, the parts the vehicles used are still from GM and are fully supported. Trying to claim otherwise is ignorant....even the warranties from those vehicles transferred completely intact to GM.

Given the massive supply problems Japan is currently experiencing, I'd say it's a heck of a lot easier to get american parts right now....

Agreed on the interior though.

The Sky was a porker at 2940 lb, but I'm guessing the FT-86 should be at least 200 lb lighter with ~200 bhp. I expect we'll see mid 6's rather than mid 7's.

i think a good comparison would be the Integra Type R. 200 hp, 2600+ lbs... imo the curb weight will be more, about 2800, but so will the tq... expect low 7s or maybe mid to high 6s...

Apparently you don't personally know several people that have had new GM buy back their Solstice or Sky for full sticker price because of unavailable parts on warrantied repairs. When GM reorganized and cancelled the Solstice/Sky, they were allowed to brake contract with all their suppliers, who all promptly halted parts production. Powertrain parts are the easy things to get because of shared components with other models, everything else is the problem.

You're right, it will all depend on the weight. The lighter the car the faster it will go 0-60 :burnrubber:. I'm expecting mid-7's for the 0-60, but I hope Toyota/Scion surprises me.

Scion comparable to Saturn overall? Fixed pricing, ugly boxes for the masses (VUE, xB), meh fwd sports coupe to jump on the import tuning bandwagon (ION Redline, tC) nice looking sports car hoping to save the brand (Sky, FR-S)...

Remind me again, what happened to Saturn?

GM phased out Saturn after talks with Penske fell through. Penske wanted GM to make Saturns for two years, then Penske would have another manufacturer lined up. But Penske failed to get another manufacturer, supposedly Renault.

So you surmise that Saturn died because of itself and not because of the massively destructive downward spiral of death that coincidentally happened to GM, its parent company, a year earlier?

Yeah, don't buy that. If GM (thats Gubment Motor's) hadn't self-imploded, and instead, like Ford, planned and saved (by holding cash, and restructuring like Ford did in the late 90's) I 99.99% guarantee Saturn would still be around. There's obviously much more to the story than that, but basically, IF GM hadn't needed a bail out (err, buyout) and instead could have weathered the slack in sales Saturn would still be here.

That actually REALLY hurt the area I live in. The Saturn plant is located in Spring Hill, TN, which was about a 30 min drive for my old place, and about a 45 min drive from Nashville. Couple of my friends parents worked there.

^ There was talk of killing Saturn years before the financial collapse. Collapse just made GM swallow their pride and axe it.

The sky was a cool looking car, but the rest of their lineup was pretty dull.
