Going back to stock after Invidia R400
Hey guys, I've just had the invidia R400 installed last week on my 2017 86. The car has Tomei UEL headers and a tune and previously had a stock midpipe and custom muffler (not sure what it is, it was already there from the previous owner).
The R400 sounds AMAZING on the outside alongside my Tomei headers but inside the car the drone is ridiculous. It's like having a sub in the boot. The low frequency sounds just take over everything else when you're in the cabin and the effect is considerably worse when the windows are both up and the drone reverberates all over the place. Is there any other good option other than putting my previous setup back on and trying to sell the R400? |
Unfortunately you have learned the hard way why people repeatedly say not to cheap out and buy garbage exhaust from Invidia. Only thing you can do is hack it up and weld in Vibrant resonators to try to fix the drone, or sell it to someone else and buy something that’s good. The only thing Invidia makes that’s even tolerable is the Q300, and that’s debatable.

You can apply some sound dampening/deadening material to the floor and trunk of the car. Most of the options these days a essentially big stickers. Peel back the carpet and stick it to the metal. You can easily find it at the parts stores with popular brands like Dynamat. If your unsure on installation youtube will be your friend.

^+1, just be sure to do it when/where it's at least 60 degrees! most sound dampening doesn't form or stick very well under that. the warmer, the better. it can still be done, but increases the force required to form and stick it by at least double.

I've just gone back to the shop and they've cut in the stock midpipe to fit the R400 muffler and it sounds much better now. I think I'll keep it this way.

Haha same thing happened to me when I went UEL + R400. I sold it in a week and went with the Q300 (love the volume levels now).

I am going back to stock and a new EL header. Tired of the UEL sound on my tomie header.
