Placing side mirrors inside a car, on the A-pillar
 

Might sound dumb, but I don't think it's a bad idea to remove side mirrors and place it on the A-pillar inside the vehicle. The A-pillars are thick enough that mirrors could be there. Especially for race cars, it's very feasible and legal.

Advantages:
cheaper
lighter weight
Less head-turning to see the mirrors
less drag
able to see the view that was blocked by the side mirrors
Doesn't get icy in cold weather
the car becomes narrower

Disadvantages:
Possibly wider blind spot, but this can be minimized by bending the mirrors strategically

I think it's possible on an FR-S too. Kinda like the idea... But would have big BIG blind spots... No matter how u angle them, it's a major con.

That link shows a "blind spot" mirror, don't think you replace your normal side mirrors with this... It just aids you with an extra mirror. Like sbxjap said, if it's inside the cabin; no matter how much you adjust it, it'll still have big blind spots just because of where it's stationed.

No, no no, H! Go to amazon.com and search "RAZO" clip on mirror. This clips onto the front of your existing rearview.

I was first introduced to these while stationed in Japan! ALL CARS should have these! The FRS/BRZ really needs one. Mine covers the blind spot behind my passenger's head...
Now there's great visibility.

yeah I was thinking a larger rear view mirror is a good idea too. I think it can be used to see the visual field that all three mirrors combined could see before the upgrade. Maybe that plus moving the side mirrors behind the A-pillar and pointing it outward toward the blindspot is a good combination?

I think that the side mirrors do not have to be placed outside the vehicle in order to minimize the blind spot. Placing the side mirrors outside the vehicle would allow you to see better what is behind you and the body of your own car (fig 2&5):

But if you want the mirrors to minimize the blind spot, you'd point it more outward (fig 1&4.), and THAT can be done with mirrors placed behind the a-pillar without compromise.

Wouldn't pass inspection in my state. Side mirrors are required.

The A-pillars have airbags in them, i would rather have working airbags thanks.

I have a broadway mirror for the rear view and it is perfect.

Broadways are excellent for rear view mirrors.

I have the largest concave broadway that they make. It really is the difference in driving comfort.

I have one and it's perfect. Concave helps with lights in your eyes and I'm able to see out of the front driver window in the corner of it. Best investment for sure.
