Spinning Stud
 

I went to change to my winter wheels and found that one of the studs on my driver's side rear wheel is spinning when I attempt to take the lug nut off. The stud doesn't appear to be stripped but is no longer tight in the housing.

How can I get this lug off/stud out and how hard will it be to replace it?

Assuming the hub is still good, a stud replacement is pretty easy to do from home. You just need something like a universal ball joint separator tool.

If the hub itself is stripped where the stud is supposed to be press-fit, then you'll probably need a new hub.

The tough part is going to be figuring out how to get the wheel off without damaging it. Then, you can get to work diagnosing if the hub is still good. Do you have any access behind the hub to maybe see the stud? Perhaps grip it with something?

IDK about getting the lug nut off if the stud has its splines stripped at its base.

Once the nut does come off though; you should replace the whole hub, not just the stud. The splines that hold the stud in are not replaceable/repairable and are part of the hub.

Having said that; I find it weird that you stripped the splines. (if that is actually what has happened) Most just snap a stud...

You will need a 32mm axle nut socket.

It started happening after I took the car to discount tire to get new tires about a year ago. It wasn't too bad but apparently I let it go too long. I wonder if they could have just over torqued the lug nut?

I'd suggest that you stop by Discount Tire (since you bought tires there) and see if they will fix it for free - :iono:

My guess: the hub is fine. the threads on the stud are not.
Any tire shop can fix it. It's part of the job. Sometimes shit hits the fan.

If it is an open nut, drill the stud out. You will be driving what is left of the stud out and replacing anyway. if you are lucky the stud was stripped. If not new hub.
New nut is also in your future.


If capped nut, center drill cap then see above.

If the stud is spinning at the base in the hub, chances are the hub is not fine. If you're lucky it pulled the splines off the base of the stud, otherwise it rounded off the opening inside the hub and the new stud will just spin too.


The splines at the bottom near the base are what's causing the issue here, not the main threads.

You're right..... well I'm screwed then

Went to take the hub off and found it incredibly rusty. Finally got it off after an hour of "light coercion". Turns out the hub was drilled out previously to put in slight larger studs. Can't wait to do the other three hubs since their studs have started to spin as well
