Broken cam head and sprocket. What caused it
 
Tearing down my engine and found this. Also found a spun rod bearing. 2013 frs 123k miles
What would cause it

Was valve spring recall done?

It could be a few things besides the common causes.
Some times it's due to poor metals, weak spots in the forging, machining, installation or just a bad luck.

Did the spun rod bearing lock up the engine?

No, Turns out the bearing was bad but didnt hurt the rod or the crank throw.

The knock was coming from the broken intake cam sprocket.
