Looking for axle back advice

Hello all. I'm new to these cars and new to this forum. I have read a good bit of information here and learned a good bit. But some of the posts are fairly old. So, I'm looking for the most up to date info I can get.

I'm interested in a axle back exhaust for my new 2020 BRZ. I like sports car sound and volume but I hate drone. If I wanted to get a better rumble or burble without giving me a headache, what choices should be looking at.

Also, what is OFT (open flash tablet)
Thanks
Roger

Strictly speaking about axle backs, typically they are on the cheaper end and you can expect a little drone. Of course this also depends on headers and tune etc.

I personally got a catback from perrin to which I have been very happy with for years. However I wasn't looking for big sound, just a change of tone and slight increase in volume and with no other mods for intake/exhaust. What you need to define is exactly what you want in terms of sound and quality and then match that with the price that is reasonable for what you want to pay. Keep in mind with exhaust when you spend more you can typically expect a higher quality product.

PS If your looking at the borla axle backs, be warned I've seen those rust in as little as a couple years in Ca no less. So you being in Washington I would recommend going for something that is not prone to rusting.

Hello Rabrooks and welcome to our forum -

It sounds like you are looking for about what I was looking for in an exhaust modification.

About 5 years ago I purchased a Nameless axle back for my 2013 FR-S. It has 2.5 inch piping with 5" mufflers. I have been very satisfied with the sound. I don't have any other exhaust modifications.

I believe it sells for about $650.

In 2017 they changed the flange where the axleback connects, meaning not all axle backs fit all models. Borla makes a touring axleback which fits 2017+ models.

Catbacks will give a ton more options to choose from. There are plenty of options which do not drone and have various sound profiles and very from subtle to loud. They also fit all models.

Part of my reason for just an axle back is to not spend money on something I cant use later. Id like to add a turbo to this car in the future. So spending money on things I cant use when the turbo goes on is what I'm trying to avoid.

I will track this car as soon as its broken in and the oil is changed. I have been tracking cars for some time and I'm used to ALOT more power. So this is a change and culture shock for me. However, this car has the best "turn in and set" of most any car I have driven.

Get the remark axle back because later on you can buy the mid pipe from them and make it a full exhaust system. I had it on my 2016 and it was amazing. There was a bit of drone at first. Then I got use it. But now I have been you remark FT86speedfactory exhaust.

If you want to spend money now. Go with the Nameless 3" as you can upgrade everything all the way up to a overpipe come turbo time.

I found a Catback system for sale locally at a reasonable price. What do you guys know about the HKS Legamax system. Exterior noise is great. I don't like drone. Please share your thoughts.
Thanks

Almost every exhaust system will have a little drone, the resonance is exacerbated by the thin sheet metal in the trunk unfortunately. I have a turbo setup that is completely catless now and stock catback with a Berk muffler delete. Doesn't really drone at all and is only loud if you're on it a good bit.

You can generally keep everything from the frontpipe and back if you put a turbo in, so any catback will be fine. Buy once, buy right.

I like the Invidia Q300 and I like the Deep mellow tone of the Invidia N1. But I understand the N1 has a bit of drone. I dont know what the CBE is. How does it compare to the mentioned.

What are your power goals for FI.

A nice dual resonated 2.5" front pipe and a 2.5" overpipe will flow fine for the FI power levels of a stock block and transmission, plus the car will sound a little bit louder with really no extra drone.

A axle back will only bring some noise to the yard, no additional power at all, for the money spent on an axle back, you can actually get some benifits later down the track with a overpipe and frontpipe.

I'm pushing around 270hp with a AVO and just a overpipe and frontpipe, full OEM catback, car sounds only slightly louder than stock, no real drone, and super stealthy.

The only give away is the sound of the turbo spooling as I chop the local WRX owners who were out for a easy win against a NA sounding 86.

And if you think the car handles good now, try some good suspension, sensible wheels and tyres, and some alignment solutions, the difference in handling from stock is amazing.

I’ve got an STI axle back on mine. Fits perfect being OEM+ and I obviously love the look of it. It gives a good sound at idle, more aggressive overall but not over the top. A little drone in the 2000 - 3000 rpm range.

According to STI it gives a 13% lower back pressure, but as others have said regarding axle backs, I didn’t notice any power difference overall. I noticed the car was a little more responsive when I put lighter alloy wheels on to be honest. Best of luck with your choice.

Well for power, I'd love to get to about where you are. It is important for the car to be very streetable as it really is my wife's car. That kind of power in a car that's as light as this one and as agile as this one will be a really fun car and should hurt feelings regularly.
I picked up what appears to be a Nameless catless header and a 2.5 overpipe. I got a front pipe with resonator and no cat as a freebie. Don't know if it will work with the system yet. My plan is to install the header and the overpipe and then go for a ride. If I like the sound, I'll leave it alone. I do have a line on a HKS catback system that I may pick up this weekend. Any of this that doesn't go with the FI in the future, I'll just have to resell. I know the header will have to be replaced.
Thanks

Corsa catback...no drone, just great sound. Not loud, but I can't stop revving it up and shifting just to hear it braap on the up shift. Truly addicting.
