License plate holes - Dealer installed for sure?

I'm in the process of purchasing a FR-S from another state. The other state has front license plates but my state does not. From searching around on here it sounds like all FR-S cars come with the regular front bumper, and then the dealers in the states with front license plates drill the holes for the front license plate mount. Is that correct? I'll need to make sure my dealer intercepts the car when it comes off the truck before somebody drills into the bumper! Just wanted to make sure that the cars destined for those states didn't somehow already come with the pre-drilled bumper on them.

Holes are added at the dealership.

m.box.design 08-04-2012 02:12 AM

The drilling is done at the dealership. You'll just need to call the dealership not to drill the car.

YukiHachiRoku 08-04-2012 02:12 AM

I told my dealership not to drill holes, and they listened/respected my request.

Same here. Told the dealer not to drill for the plate or wash the car. This dealership usually drills the bumpers for all the cars on the lot. Unfortunately the Forester XT we bought from them 5 years ago had its bumper drilled.

Texas BRZ 08-04-2012 02:22 AM

You're correct... The dealer itself would be the one to start drilling the place for the front license plate bracket... I let my salesman clearly know that I did not want that to happen, and thankfully it didn't.

I would do whatever it takes to clearly relay that prior message across to the dealer (and to your sales manager / person) that would be handling and have access to your FR-S as soon as it's delivered.

do not want!

86_ZN6 08-04-2012 02:32 AM

drilling is part of PDI

instruct dealer not to do it

boonFRS 08-04-2012 03:26 AM

Same like the rest. Just ask the dealer. You might have to sign a paper saying that you didn't want it drill though, for legality isssues. I did.

Gannicus77 08-04-2012 03:50 AM

I emailed the salesman at the dealer where I bought my FRS not to drill any holes in the front bumper. My car arrives and I found out that they had drilled holes in the front bumper. I was pissed, but it's California law and I didnt want this to prevent me from buying the car. On the plus side, I bought the vehicle for mrsp and it was the color I wanted.

Pretty sure they don't pre-drill them at the plant. They may be drilled prior/after loading into the trucks to their respective dealers? (If not drilled at the dealers)

That 86 is straight off the boat mate.... I think its done on production line.... Unlike FR-S and BRZ

BanzaiZee 08-04-2012 12:40 PM

I just picked mine up yesterday and they didn't drill any holes, and I'm in a state that requires front plates. The dealership just told me I could come back and get them installed if I want them front/center.

Not every state requires front plate so they come to the US without pre made holes and are added for those that need them.

Countries that require front plate come with front bumpers that are molded with the holes in them, they are not drilled, but yes they come from the factory with holes.

Thought so.... Cheers......

My Canadian (BC, where we require a front plate) FR-S was drilled at the factory.

DrifterX 08-04-2012 01:59 PM

Mine has no holes, the dealer is technically required to drill the plates in here in WA but you can get around it by putting your own plate on once the dealer gives it to you. (We have dealers do taxes title and licensing out here.) That plate is going in my front window, screw drilling into it.

One of the owners of a Subaru dealership down here in Florida just got his FR-S delivered from Connecticut. It had a front grill bracket, not drilled, just clipped on.

Going in your front window will still net you a ticket, trust me, I've been there.

Also, when/if you get in an accident, having a sharp piece of metal flying around waiting to decapitate someone is never good.

You win this thread sir, also, I told my friend about this and he suggested the thing that holds the racing world together, Zip-ties!

siXXtoes 08-04-2012 04:41 PM

Yes, the dealership service department drills the holes. I was lucky because my dealer told the service guys not to put front plates on any FRS. They leave it up to the owner. My bracket came in the trunk.

Tanuki 08-04-2012 04:46 PM

My dealer just gives you the brackets and tells you that if you want them installed, to let them know.

Its possible the dealer was telling a white lie. Either way, they only drilled the grill, not a painted surface, so I don't mind at all.
