Question about transmission fluid replacement for automatic.

My question is can the fluid just be drained and refilled until it comes out the fill hole or do you have to go through all the steps in the diy? Or do you have to wait for it to come out of the overfill hole?

Why would it be that much more difficult than manual transmission?

Yeah the auto tranny does need the extra steps. Unless you want to buy a new one.

If you don't want to do all that jazz, pay someone to do it. Yes it's going to be more than $150 but it will make your tranny last longer.

But what is the difference between the automatic and manual that would make you have to go through the additional step?

Is no one changing out their transmission fluid in their automatics? I guess it’s considered lifetime fluid?

outside of this forum not many people i know in this neck of the woods ever touch their transmission fluid... i get the weirdest looks from people when i say i do it once a year



i wonder why the general public is so adament about going to Mr Lube every 5k and getting a watered down oil change and no filter replacement... but were never told to do the same for transmission....

The difference is how they work. AT uses the fluid pressure to change gears. The MT just uses oil and a lubricant and coolant.

There should be a maintenance schedule with your owners manual. Read it and it will tell you what and when things need to be changed. If you don't have that then Google the schedule.

I changed my (the dealership did) AT fluid at 45K and at 72K. Each time because the car started to shift like crap.

The salesman tried to tell me I didn't need to change it. So, I asked the mechanic and he said the fluid looked totally done to him. I didn't wait as long the next time.

It has an over flow plug though So if you fill it til it hits the bottom of the fill hole and Start the engine wouldn’t any excess fluid overflow into this compartment? Anyone have any insight on how this works?

Because the torque converter can't be drained, the 3x flush method gets the majority of the spent fluid out of the system - but even then not all of it.

I tried this method and I didn’t get the fluid temperature arrows.

I tested it after the second flush and the arrows never appeared. Tried it again on the third flush and nothing either. Guess I wasn’t doing something right. The check engine light stayed on after the change and I had to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to clear it. But it was all good after.

I ended up just putting 2.1 quarts in running the engine and drained a little of it out the overflow. It was still flowing out.

I checked the overflow when I first drained and very little came out. 110k miles. I guess you loose some of the fluid.

I drove it for 800 miles so far after the change and it hasn’t blown up yet. Cross my fingers. Lol. Did feel a lot smoother.

You're jumping the wrong pins maybe? You shouldn't be losing fluid in a sealed system, it was likely due to incorrect temp.

i’m Pretty sure I was in the right holes. But it was so tight down there I might have been mistaken. Lol. Did I just say that.

I did it twice because I wanted to see what the arrows looked like before I did the final change.

Not sure where on the display to look. I guess if someone could get a pic of their it could help the next guy.
