Battery buildup w/ corrosion
 

My battery holster has been having a buildup of what looks like corrosion. Thoughts on remedying this? Sand it down and repaint? Anything for a preventative use?

That wetness on top of the battery is electrolyte leaking from the vents, aside from the corrosion on the hold down bracket, it should never be left there to remain as current is actually discharging through that wet layer between the battery terminals. If you've got a multimeter handy, marvel as you're getting 3 volts off of the plastic case in the middle of the battery away from the terminals.

Remove the hold down bracket and clean off the battery with something like this https://www.permatex.com/products/cl...ttery-cleaner/

Some will say to use baking soda, but I've had nothing but terrible results with that solution. Clean off the hold down bracket with the battery cleaner too, wire brush it and repaint it. The simplest solution to put between the bracket and battery is pieces of inner tube. I hope you brush your teeth better than you clean you car!

What is going on is what is stated above. I would use baking soda to help neutralize the acid. Not on the battery but on the bracket. Also use lots of water everywhere! If you keep your battery clean the felt washers are not needed. The washers will help if you neglect your battery again.

Just replace it, part is cheap from Toyota.

Oh, Bubba says to clean it up with a solution of baking soda and water, dry it off then repaint the bracket.

Terminals look spotless.
Wire brush the holder.

look at the top of the battery. it looks like someone exploded a can of wd-40 over it. that is where the corrosion is coming from.

Well, there, RZNT4R, it's too bad you had bad results cleaning up a battery using baking soda.

It's important to use a name brand baking soda, not a generic or a knock off store brand. Also, it's very important to mix the baking soda and well water (only) in a small, old coffee can. Then apply the mixture with a very much used 1" paint brush.

I zoomed in and saw the entire top of the battery it wet.
I would just replace the battery.

Well, in that case, Bubba can't guarantee the results. Them city folk put all kinds of chemicals in their water supply, ya know. - :confused0068:

Reminds me of a well I had back in Connecticut. When we moved in I noticed that the household water supply had a triple filtration set up. Well, the filters were getting real dirty, so I opened up the bypass so I could take the filters to town with me one work day, to be sure I got the right ones.

Meanwhile, my wife carried on the normal household activities, including washing the clothes. When I got home she exclaimed that something was wrong with our water supply. Sure enough all my underwear "sparkled".

Also all the facets and valves in the house had a gritty sound when the handles were turned. Yep, our well was dug down into a mica rock strata.

So, all the facets, innards of the washing machine and dishwasher had to be taken apart and cleaned and all the lines flushed - :mad0260:
