Anyone out there with catless headers and a deep rumble exhaust note?

What are you running?

The best rumble I've been able to produce was during some brief testing without the catback and just having the JDL uncatted UEL header and JDL catted+resonated frontpipe connected.

Temporary, but it was the best sound out of this car I've ever heard, but not very practical due to a noticeable loss in acceleration.

Here's all my setups:

HTML Code:

header          frontpipe      catback            specs                      sound
stock          stock          stock              3 cat, 2 res, 1 muff        1/5 muffled, no rumble, thin/flat, plain, very quiet
stock          stock          FT86 resonated      3 cat, 2 res, 1 muff        1/5 like stock but a little louder
JDL uncat UEL  stock          FT86 resonated      1 cat, 2 res, 1 muff        4/5 amazing deep rumble, louder
JDL uncat UEL  JDL catted      FT86 resonated      1 cat, 1 res, 1 muff        2/5 louder, deep rumble reduced, more thin/flat sound
JDL uncat UEL  JDL catted res  FT86 resonated      1 cat, 2 res, 1 muff        2/5 quieter, like stock but louder, very little rumble, thin/flat, fart can-ish in higher rpms
JDL uncat UEL  JDL catted res  none                1 cat, 1 res, 0 muff        5/5 extremely loud (loudest), super deep rumble, loss of torque/acceleration

I'm running a gruppe s uel header and works abm. The idle isn't super loud/rumbly, but it sounds great when you rev it or accelerate under load. No free drone either when you're just cruising. Before I put on the axleback, I fired up the car with no muffler and it sounded glorious but it's definitely too loud to dd imo. But for cheap, loud, rumble, a muffler delete, catless uel, stock everything else, might be the ticket.

Ask yourself this, what has a deeper tone, a tuba, or a flute, and why?

The reverb in a large pipe gives a hollower, "deeper" exhaust note. You won't get a deep note without a thicker diameter exhaust. You also will get a lot more drone, so choose wisely. Pay attention to see if cars you're listening to are turbo or not - a turbo is like an in-line muffler. 3" with turbo sounds amazing, even catless.
