Loose bolt in engine/transmission assembly?

I randomly decided to take a look at my engine bay today and noticed a bolt that appears loose where I assume the transmission connects to the engine itself. I do not have the right tools to check if it is actually loose, can anyone shed some light if this is anything serious that could be a problem for concern?

Thinking about taking it to the dealership so they can double check all the bolts, since the engine was out of my car @5k miles for service.

Thanks.

That bolt definitely should not be sticking out like that. 14mm, tighten it up or bring it somewhere. Have whomever check all are torqued down correctly.
That bolt is helping to hold the transmission to the engine.

The engine was out of your car at 5k for service? What happened at 5k?

Grady 08-29-2019 10:38 PM

Engine was out..... Technician F'ed up and forgot to tighten that bolt. I would have them re-torque all the bolts and do a good inspection.

Edit.
Make sure it is documented so if any quality issues come up in the future.

Indeed it was loose, after the car cooled down I was able to finger tighten it back for now.

And yes, I had a CEL at 5k so the engine was out to perform fixes. The car is now at 21k.

Based on their post history, a valve adjustment was needed.

In regards to the loose bolt OP... if you don’t have the tools and mechanical confidence to address the issue, let the dealership deal with it and ask that they recheck all bolts. Bolts such as that one that hold the engine and transmission together are quite vital.

Meanwhile, I suggest you just snug the bolt up. Snug = hand tight then 1/2 turn more with an open or box end wrench.

;)

But after seeing something so obvious you’d want them to go over anything that was touched. That’s really sloppy!

Thank god for this post cause I got OCD and checked my transmission bolts after getting a TOB repair done by the dealership. One of my transmission bolts was loose sticking out an inch, I'm missing a transmission bolt on the left side that bolts into the cover, the bottom transmission bolt that goes through the same cover came loose at one point cause the cover fell down and interfered with my steering rack, and the best part was that they didn't even mount the big ground wire that bolts on the bottom starter/transmission bolt.

Epic fail.

True. My post followed the post by @NCtoBRZ 's post where he suggested that the OP take the car back to the dealer for a complete checkup - ;)

Jeez it sounds like you have a ton of loose bolts. Hopefully you can get them all fixed up. I better find all the bolt locations and check my other ones. I wonder if the techs just forgot to tighten them or once they are loosened and re-tightened, they just don't hold up as well through usage and rough shifts..

Whats worst is that today, August 29th, marks exactly 3 years since the day I purchased the car :bs:

How did your car start without te ground wire attached?

And no you don't have fucking OCD. Learn what OCD is before misapplying the term.

Maybe he did check the bolts four times for the fifth time?

Jeez rough morning? Obviously I’m not saying OCD in that manner but anyways. I don’t know how my car started. Maybe the hanging ground bracket was touching the chassis. Are you implying I was imagining the ground bracket wasn’t bolted? :iono:

Not a rough morning. My son has REAL OCD and it is a pet peeve of mine when so many people misuse the term.

The first question was just that, a question, and was not meant to imply anything. There is no way the car should start without the main ground hooked up.

It's the wire in the second circle from the top. The bracket with the wire was hanging not bolted to the starter/transmission. Is it important? :iono:

Yes it is important.

I do not remember but my guess is the battery is bonded to the chassis and then to the engine. This means you had high current going from the cassis to the engine thru a lot of little wires/lines. Not a good thing but your car must have survived it.

Yes Tcoat is right if the battery ground was not hooked up nothing would happen!

alan.chalkley 08-30-2019 10:42 PM

Yes , the "talented technicians" and loose bolts.
My experience was loose tail shaft bolts after a new clutch install on a v8 commodore. The dealer said that the tail shaft was not touched and i had to buy new bolts and install them myself.
How does a clutch get replaced without removing the tail shaft?
The second was loose bolts on a torque converter when an auto transmission was replaced on my old ford, the mechanic admitted he stuffed up and fixed it for free.
Now if anyone works on my cars i double check for loose bolts myself.

It's the second red circle. It's on the passenger side bellhousing. It bolts on the bottom starter bolt. You can reach the wire from the engine bay. Just follow the one from the positive terminal down the area.

Sweet thanks!

Impureclient 10-09-2019 10:33 PM

What is with Photobucket blurring their pics... And for that matter why not just use Imgur since they don't block and now blur the pics hosted on there.
Nevermind, just looked it up. Now they blur so you have to go to their site which has ads. Still would use Imgur since they never have played games like that.
