Manual transmission improvements 2017+

For the 2017+ models, was there internal changes to the manual transmissions that alleviated some of the common gear change grinding issues of previous years?

Can anyone physically confirm this?

If this is true, has anyone done a swap into an older car without interchangeability issues?

I think that requires a driver change ;)

"grinding" as in notchy shifts or are you missing the shift and the lever rattles like a mofo since it isn't fully in the gate? the former is normal operation and the latter usually depends on your shifting technique and won't change with a new 86 gearbox..

They added shot peening to the 6th gear cog? Because the massive torque of the FA20 was snapping teeth off of 6th gear?

Agree. This is definitely driver mod.

I have the '13 and my gears never grind unless it is my fault. Been driving it for 6 years+ now. As far as I know the only thing that changed is the gear ratio.

Because people cannot drive and would lug around town in 6th at low speed.

Does this mean the 2017 diff got beefed up too?

xdavidx 08-12-2019 07:13 PM

I have a 17+ and just recently the high rpm shifter rattle began - 13k miles.

I also had some grinding going into 4th above 6.5k rpms last weekend on a canyon road for about 30 minutes. Really weird as it was definitely not me, I tried it a bunch of different ways and there was a crunch no matter how I shifted if it was into 4th and above 6.5k rpms. Then it suddenly stopped doing it and hasn't come back.

This is an awesome document! I wish OEMs released this to the public every year! This answers my question, thank you.

Well I should have been more specific on the "issue". It's the 3-4 shift thats a known weak link but I have heard complaints of other gears. There is a thrust problem and over extension in 4th. The aftermarket makes a fork to replace the stock one for a reason.

Mine lasted a long time without an issue and yes, I beat it like a red headed step child, so i'm not blaming Toyobaru.

I believe 4th walks up and eats itself at high torque levels with sticky rubber

I thought the upgraded fork was because the OEM fork failed when using heavier clutch packs

I've had neither issue, as yet, so I cannot say for sure
