3mm spacer on track, lug nut had almost 8 turns
Hi all,
I put on my 225 45R17 on 17x8 +45mm wheels. My front have -2.4* from camber bolts. Unfortunately, with these SX2s that I put on today, there was only about one credit card worth of clearance (1mm) between the tire and the spring perch. I bought 3mm hubcentric stancemagic spacers expecting this as a possible issue. Should I run my two track days this weekend with the spacers (the lug nuts had 7 3/4 of turns)? It’s too late to schedule for an alignment if I were to bring down the camber at home. Another option is to run my old 215 PS4Ses, I wanted to stop tracking on them because the shoulders were getting murdered... |
I consider 6 full turns a safe minimum. I'd say you are ok at 7.75 turns. Check torque every time out.

Agree with Dan......you should be all good.
FYI, don't check torque when wheels are hot, but check it a couple minutes before heading out that session. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |
Surprised you have that little clearance with that camber. SSC folks can get away with running +45's with around -3.

Another chiming in that it sounds like a safe amount of engagement.

1.5xD minimum thread engagement.

You only want to torque your wheels when they're "cold". I've seen too many people come right off the track and grab their torque wrench to start torquing wheels. Bad news. That's how you weaken components or snap studs. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |

Check a few minutes *before* going out, don't torque them hot, right off the track! |
Quoted from the McGard website
"Note: When installing wheel lock nuts and lug nuts, verify that it is the correct thread size, seating surface type (cone seat, radius seat, shank) and style as recommended by the wheel manufacturer. Minimum thread engagement must be equal to the thread diameter of the wheel stud. Example: M12 x 1.5 nut requires a minimum of 12mm (.472”) of thread engagement." |

That said, I feel a lot better about my "minimum 6 turns" rule on known GOOD wheel studs (and lug nuts). You might want more than that with stock wheelstuds. I got ARP studs for my BRZ based on reports of people stripping them. MSI are another option here. Still, me, I'd run with 7.75 turns on stock studs, but keep an eye on torques and on threads. In addition to torquing "cold", torque to manufacturer spec (89 lb-ft), there's no need to go beyond that. |

i also measure lug torque in ugga-dugga's. |
Interesting thread.... a few months back i had a different set of wheels with a bad offset and was trying to use a 5mm spacer and it def seemed like not enough thread to me so i didn't use them. It felt like only half the lug nut was on the lug.

Always wondered if all wheels have the same thickness where the lug nuts go or different? |
So I ended up running the weekend with the 3mm spacers. Everything was fine and the wheels stayed tight after the initial 50 miles.
Thinking about getting 2 215/45R17 GT Radial Champiro SX2s so I can run without spacers. Is it okay to run 215s on 8 inch wide rims for track use? Would the BRZ be okay in stock form with 215s in the front and 225s in the rear? |
