1.5xD minimum thread engagement.

On 12mm x 1.25mm wheel studs, 1.5D is 12mm x 1.5/1.25mm = 14.4 turns! *QUITE* conservative, I don't know if the stock setup gives that much engagement...

That said, I feel a lot better about my "minimum 6 turns" rule on known GOOD wheel studs (and lug nuts). You might want more than that with stock wheelstuds. I got ARP studs for my BRZ based on reports of people stripping them. MSI are another option here.

Still, me, I'd run with 7.75 turns on stock studs, but keep an eye on torques and on threads.

In addition to torquing "cold", torque to manufacturer spec (89 lb-ft), there's no need to go beyond that.

FWIW, the stock stud with no spaces on these wheels had about 12 turns.

3mm spacer should take out 3mm/(1.25mm per turn) = 2.4 turns, so with spacer you should have 12 - 2.4 = 9.6 turns, wonder why you only get 7 3/4? Worth investigatin...

Darn that is a great point. Since the spacers are visible behind the rims still, I just went to make sure that they indeed sent me 3mm spacers and not 5mm spacers. I must have miscounted the 12 revolutions...

D is what it always is. Diameter.

i know plenty of 'D's it could be ;)

i also measure lug torque in ugga-dugga's.

Interesting thread.... a few months back i had a different set of wheels with a bad offset and was trying to use a 5mm spacer and it def seemed like not enough thread to me so i didn't use them. It felt like only half the lug nut was on the lug.

5mm is too much/too close. I wouldn't use a 5mm with stock studs.

(Slightly on topic)
Always wondered if all wheels have the same thickness where the lug nuts go or different?

So I ended up running the weekend with the 3mm spacers. Everything was fine and the wheels stayed tight after the initial 50 miles.

Thinking about getting 2 215/45R17 GT Radial Champiro SX2s so I can run without spacers. Is it okay to run 215s on 8 inch wide rims for track use? Would the BRZ be okay in stock form with 215s in the front and 225s in the rear?

I've been curious about that as well but never looked it up.
