Two questions: Gloves and Transmission. Pit crew gloves?

Anyone autocrossing with an AT/Paddle shifter?

I ask because I'm hitting the summit this weekend and I'll be doing some skidpad /courses in my AT FR-S.

I need some gloves because I found that the wheels can be tricky to hold on to when I have adrenaline rushing and my palms get sweaty.

Racing gloves, or pit crew gloves? It seems that the grip parts are made from similar materials, is there something about traditional racing gloves (that go for like $150+) that makes it that much more special than a $20 pit crew glove?

I autocross with the paddle shifter. I only touch it once to get to 2nd. Racing gloves usually are fire proof which makes them expensive. Have you tried un armored motorcycle gloves?

Yep, racing gloves are for grip and fire resistance, and are generally curved to fit comfortably on a steering wheel. Best to avoid grease, oil, and fuel with them, as it will reduce their ability to protect.

$15 mechanics gloves should give you grip and protection from hot bits, while being more breathable.

You could also look at karting gloves...not fire resistant but a lot less than the nomex racing gloves and function the same.

Baseball batting gloves will work just fine too.

Ironically, I use nomex gloves when I drive the kart because that's what I had already. If you want cheaper but not terrible, some guys like these:

I've seen guys wearing mechanix gloves at an autocross. Seems a little much if you have power steering. How sweaty do your hands really get?

you still have to move the steering wheel the full rotation quickly, sometimes you just don't grip the wheel hard enough, sweaty or not.

I've never had an issue without gloves. I do suffer from very dry hands though.

i've lost my steering wheel a few times when the car did things i wasn't prepared for (like snap oversteer), also the hand glances off the shifter knob at least once during a race weekend

it happens, to me anyway, and others i'm sure... i hope

having said that i have never used gloves (or race shoes, or any of that fancy stuff) cuz you know..

because oldschool :D

In my experience, if you are sweating that much, you are possibly gripping the wheel too firmly. I personally dont like wearing gloves but some racing requires it. I definitely would not prefer it for autocross but I do see others do it.

Alright! Taking my car out to the summit today. Wish me luck! :D Thanks for your help guys.

I've been feeling like crap lately cuz I've always been on the fence when deciding between MT and AT (I went with AT for practical reasons). Gonna take some vids.
