Exhaust First Mods - Question
Hey Guys! This is my first post on here. So don't bash to hard.
Finally got the 2019 GT86 (been wanting this car since first came out... but with a new born at 2012, wasn't an option). So far i have added the Injen Intake and nothing else. I enjoy driving this sucker but like many say you can feel a lack of power on this car, like it wants to do more but it can't. So i am thinking of getting the Tomei UEL Headers (For the Subie Rumble), Tomei Overpipe and OpenFlash Table to put it on Stage 2. Not going to do anything else on the exhaust since i want to really just get a little deeper rumble and feel the Tomei might give me that with the stock Front Pipe all the way back. My question: Is the Overpipe really worth it and will it make a difference? I know this pipe can be a pain to take out. And second, should i also do a Cat Front Pipe? Or keep the stock? Will it make a difference at all? |
Welcome.
You bought the wrong car. Lol just kidding..... The amount of power gain vs price is laughable when it comes to exhaust. Especially to this car. This is why I keep mine stock. I only changed the tips. Sure some fan boys will disagree, but it's your money if you want to speed a lot of money just for a sound, go for it. Just remember to keep all your stock stuff. You'll going to need it later. |
I had the Tomei UEL's and a catless hooker front pipe on my FRS for about 40k miles, with OFT tune. With the UEL's and FP installed + OFT tune, the torque dip was eliminated and the car was very fun to drive and sounded pretty awesome.
To answer your question: I ended up adding an aftermarket overpipe to the setup above and I felt like there was little to no difference in power/torque/sound with an aftermarket OP. Yes it was a pain to take out, lol! I eventually went back to stock headers and FP because the car was too loud for me. I'm still enjoying driving the car every day! -Sam |
That should be a significant difference once you get it all done. The pipe won't make a big difference other than sound. Headers, tune is all that matters. Lose the headers cat too. I had the same setup and all the upgrades after headers didnt make much difference. Intake felt a little better. I got the pipe more for sound and to check catless (derp I said headerless) setup (loooouudd).

I would argue that sound can have more of an effect than HP gains, pending how much. Go drive a Tesla. Super fast and torque is great but silence is weird. In some ways you lose something without sound.

Thank you all for the replies! I think i'm leaning towards Catless Headers and Tune. Skipping the OP. Save $200 for something else/meaningful and the work in taking that out.

E85 and tune. That's going to be your best bang for your buck and really wakes the engine up.
|
I would advocate for the overpipe for no other reason than it seems weird to replace everything and leave the stock one in the middle of all that aftermarket. That being said, if you only want to do header and overpipe, then yeah, skip the overpipe and only do the header. You'll want a tune for full effect.

I got a 2017, I punched out the stock header, got a 2.5" overpipe (ultrex, cost $90 new delivered) and 2.5" catless front pipe and 2.5 "catback.
I then put on a Tomei UEL header and saw absolutely no gains, except for noise, lots and lots of noise. I have replaced the UEL with the punched out OEM header and now run the 2.5" overpipe, 2.5" resonated front pipe and OEM cat back...............with no loss of power. Unless you want the rumble the UEL header is a poor choice. A good 4:2:1 would be were I would start looking. For a tuning solution the Ecutek is the best bang for buck. Main thing to remember is everyone, yes me included, with point you towards their set up, some are good, some are not. Don't put to much faith into all the UEL torque dip talk. Opinions may vary. |

Additionally, another thing I haven't been able to find. The car comes with a Sports mode button to activate... Once you tube the car does that button/setting become useless? |

The tune doesn't affect the sport mode button. That button just changes the setting on the stability control on the car (normal, sport, or off). Basically controls how much yaw or slip angle the computer will allow before intervening. |
