Which mods will age well on this platform?
 

Hi guys,

as the early production year model cars nearing 8 year mark I wanted to ask you all: what modifications will age well on these cars? (exterior and interior wise)

Things such as giant wings, aftermarket wheels, interior upgrades or extra gauges?

what are your experiences with other cars in similar situations?

Car modification fads come and go just like fashion ones. There really is no way of predicting it. For example tribal graphic stickers were a big thing for a few years. They were so popular that car companies put them on up trimmed versions and you could buy whole sets at Walmart. Put them on a car today and the only people that would be impressed are the die hard F&F fans. Big wings have come and gone over the years but to say they are in style has always been sort of questionable. Even the stock parts can be subjective when it comes to style. Many people condemned the first version of the tail lights as being to old a style even when the car first came out. It is not coincidence that it was one of the bigger changes in 17. Don’t think there are any mods that you can ensure will stand the test of time since even while you are installing them something newer and better may be hitting the market. Just mod for what you want now and don’t sweat what others may think in the future.

Clean, reversible, high quality. Think those words when you consider the car in the future.

Will anyone want a wide body car with hacked up sheet metal? Will anyone want forgestar wheels in the future? Will airbags be a serviceable, desirable upgrade in the future vs coilovers?

Consider brands that have stood the test of time and are desirable now....

Often when looking at cars from the 80s and 90s the cleanest, most desirable ones are generally not the full out builds, but more OEM+ type cars that were kept clean.

I predict the “blacked out” mod will go to the wayside soon. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking :iono:

Do what you like and make it easily reversible if it concerns you. I do agree that the more OEM style mods are more likely to stand the test of time.

Stock ages pretty well

Maybe a quality upgraded stereo that isn't over the top.
Leather seats.
BBK.

Cosmetically, not much. Bushings, braces, minor performance enhancements and possibly high-quality suspension upgrades will still be cool years from now. I'd recommend looking at sporty 80s and 90s imports that are selling used today. Which ones would you want to buy?

Seriously though, think OEM+. What would only enthusiasts notice? I think TRD intake/exhaust/suspension/kit is a good bet, as is improved braking. Then that single piece BRZ dash, OEM fog lights & center console, things that are universally enjoyed, even if they are minor upgrades.
Oh, and real weels. OEM+ again, like the forged TRD wheels is a good bet, but for aftermarket, avoid cast reps like XXR and get HREs, SSR, Volk, etc.

I think under glows will stand the test of time... just change the lamp colours to suit the fashions/fads..

What does "age well" mean to you? Do you mean that in a few years the next purchaser will pay extra for it?

Then nothing. Nothing you will do to this car will hold up resale value unless you keep it absolutely bone stock and don't drive it. Then in thirty years, if there is still gasoline, someone may be hot for it and it will hold its value.



If by "age well" you mean you will still like it in a few years and not be sorry to spent the money, then that is far more personal.

For me, that would be good wheels, good suspensions, maybe FI.

I don't think those would add anything to the resale value of the car.

This one will never go out of style. Plus $3K to the value of your car.

Seriously?? Too disco for this decade.

Only conservative/tasteful mods will save resale value. Anything outrageous will kill resale. We all want extreme suspension and power mods but to a buyer these indicate an abused vehicle and drive down value, even though the mod's may have cost thousands and improve the performance.
This is why you see members parting out their mod's prior to selling. Make it stock again and deceive potential buyers.
