Change oil before first use?
 

Dealer said, next week I might be able to take my car. :happyanim:

The car is a 2018 BRZ Automatic. It's on 10km (6.2 miles) I'm planning to change the oil at 300km (187 miles) and at 3000km (1864 miles) However, the car has been parked in the dealers showroom about a year. So I wonder:

• Is it OK to run the first 187 miles with that 1 year old oil or should I change it before I use it?

• For break-in and afterwards, is it OK to use Castrol Edge 0W-20 (full synthetic)?

Very irrelevant but:

• I'm planning to get a ceramic coating. Ziebart recommended me to get a coating to reduce the road noise (another package). I think it's applied under the car. I said, I like the car being noisy, but he said "it won't change the engine noise, but will reduce bad surface tires' noise, believe me you will love it." I know the man, he is a sales man, but I kind of respect-believe him. But it has a 7-8kg (16-17 lbs) weight. Do you recommend that?

Make them change the oil. It is 7500 miles or 7.5 months so it should be changed. Any full synthetic 0w-20 should be ok (Castrol, Mobil1, Amsoil, etc)

As far as the coating, I have never heard of ceramic coating the underside of a car (I have heard it for paint protection). Usually those are an upsell and don't really do much.

Oh, good advise. I'll try to make them do it. But I don't have a hope for it. If they refuse, should I do it?

Sorry for my bad English. I didn't mean ceramic coating for the underside. Its something different from paint ceramic coating.

I probably would change it yourself, and then wait until the break in is done at 1000 miles (1600km) for the next change.

As far as the coating or whatever it may be, it sounds like normal sales things where they are just trying to make money.

I would be firm about telling them to change the oil. They should be responsible for taking proper care of the vehicle and if it has not had an oil change for a year no question change that oil asap. Don't ask them them do it, tell them to do it because your the paying customer giving them business. You can threaten not to buy it or back out of the deal. Or threaten that you will post a yelp review saying they didn't maintain the cars properly on their lot then refused to do an oil change on a year old oil for a car they are selling. Don't back down from this, you have all the leverage since your the buyer.

Interesting. Seems overkill but I don't have evidence to say otherwise and this was my first new car. I did my first change at 1000 miles and have been going strong for 165,000 miles since though lol.

It sort of is overkill but considering that the car has been sitting full of oil for over a year and possibly not being driven, I would stay on the side of caution and do some very frequent oil changes at first to try and flush any gunk that may have built up out.


I got my first oil change at 4798 miles, something I'm not proud of. I wish I did it sooner. 6 years and over 80k later with a JO2 recall under her belt the car is still rockin though. These engines are pretty tough if you are not trying to mod it and just take normal care of the car.

It's fine to the first change interval of 7.5k miles.

Even when the OP is buying a car that has been sitting in a dealer showroom with the same oil for over a year? Possibly not even driven.

Do not get the undercoating, that stuff is horrible and does not add any benefit. Proper sound deadening is not spraying tar on the bottom of the car.

Modern synthetics are fine on the shelf for years, usage and dilution is what wears modern oils out, not time, modern engines are fairly airtight I'd expect next to no oil degradation, there are many oil analysis for this car that show 10k miles is perfectly fine and time is practically irrelevant.

Thanks, this is good info. Given that though, and how inexpensive you can just change the oil I would feel better just changing the oil just for piece of mind. However from those links it seems that it is probably fine to just not change the oil. It is really up to what the OP wants to do.

How long has the oil been in the jug you just bought? 2 weeks? 6 months? 3 years?

I've worked at car dealerships for 15 years, never heard of changing oil on a new car because it had been sitting.
