Catless Emissions?
 

Seeing that this has to do with the exhaust system. I was wondering if I would be able to pass emissions next year with a catless manifold. I know the tune tricks the the ECU and to be fair I live in Georgia and I believe all they do is stick something to my gas tank and plug something into the OBD2. I would hate to have to swap my headers just for an emissions but I wanted to get other people’s input on it.

If they are sniffing the tailpipe you will most likely be screwed. It will pick up a high NOx reading. If it isn't you are probably fine.

I don’t think they even check the tail pipe though they always just open my gas cap and put some device on there and then they plug something into the OBD 2 port. I’ve never seen them go to the back and get down and check the exhaust.

Different states different checks. As above depends how extensive checks are. Ie if your jn california you will likely fail with anything but stock tune and stock engine components.

steve99: makes me think that while that won't do for disabling P0420 on catless, but there might be some sense in piggyback solutions for use in Cali for sake of leaving CALID/CVN same but for engine to actually work different.

I am completely catless and e85. I feel no sympathy for the people behind me who smell the corn. Lol
And Oklahoma is emissions free :)

@Howaitoguru it seems all you need to pass is the gas cap pressure test and the OBDII readiness check.

Who says you might be able to skirt by as long as you don't disable any codes (P0420) from your rear O2 sensor, it MIGHT not throw a code for some time. Some catless headers have a built-in O2 spacer which will help you to temporarily get passed.

I suggest trying a dry-run through the emissions place after installing and seeing what you can do, and post results.

If there's no visual inspection, no tailpipe inspection, and your car throws no codes, then you'll be OK. An aftermarket header will fail a visual and a sniffer, and will fail if your tune doesn't work around codes.

So what tunes wouldn’t work around codes? Open Flash? Delicious? I know they don’t make custom tunes to break emissions laws.

I don't know. Never tried to pass smog with catless. Probably they all could do it if set up right. I'd talk to your tuner. I'm sure delicious could set it up not to throw a code.

@Howaitoguru There isn't a tune that "works around emissions", your car needs to be able to throw problem codes in order to pass emissions. This is called "readiness" - No ability to throw codes = no readiness, no pass.

There are ways of modifying the tune (romraider) to enable / disable problem codes. Again, in this case you want them enabled for readiness.

To pass your emissions, you need to use techniques to hopefully temporarily trick your car into not throwing codes; that is O2 spacers and (guessing here) driving around in closed-loop mode by driving around super slow / low rpm / low throttle.
