What glue to use on a abs ducktail ?
 

So i just got a new abs ducktail from ikon and was wondering what i should use to glue it. I tried 3m Double sided tape and almost lost it on the highway. I think the shape of it is a bit off and the tape dint have even pressure all over. i was thinking some sort of caulking maybe gorilla construction adhesive i also want something that wont destroy the paint. do you guys have any ideas thanks:)

if your 3m tape didn't work its probably because you didn't prep the surface right or use the right kind of tape. I have a similar duckbill on my supra held on with 3m tape for over a year now and I have no idea how I will ever pull it off if I want to without ripping the paint off.

if you really are using the automotive 3m doublesided tape, get your self some 3m adhesion promoting wipes and wipe down the tape surface prior to trying it again. I literally don't think I could pull mine off if I wanted to right now.

With that said, I have also used some dow corning 732 caulking to put on a carbon fiber diverter on my fender and barely got that shit off. The cleanup process to get the remains of the silicone off the paint once the piece was off was a pain in the ass and I wouldnt suggest it.

I made sure the both surfaces where prep properly and i used the right 3m tape its just theres not good enough contact between the ducktail and the trunk.

What did you use for prep?

you used this stuff, correct? not some ebay, direct from china "W3" tape?

because i installed this tiny gag spoiler with 2 tiny little pieces of that tape, and it stayed on for 2 years outside through rain, sleet, snow, and ice, until a youth group charity car wash baseball-batted it off a few weeks ago.

my first suspicion is that you didn't get the right 3m tape. don't buy it online, buy it from a local auto parts store only. it's the best way to know what you're getting.

Maybe more importantly, where did you buy the wing? if it's not matching the contours of the trunk lid correctly then you would have an issue. And "fitment pictures on customer vehicles" smells of eBay

Agree on the "not prepped properly" stuff. Doesn't just mean wiping down both sides. It means going through the whole process from cleaning thoroughly with alcohol to keeping a good amount of pressure on it over night. Sounds like a pain in the ass, but it's worth not having $300 fly off your car on the highway. FT86SF has a great video on it:

If you did all that and it still doesn't stick, then the spoiler probably doesn't line up enough on the trunk for the 3M to stick which just comes down to poor quality. Certainly wouldn't use glue to apply any kind of aero on a car for obvious reasons. Good luck

There is more to prepping then just cleaning it up real well. You should be using an adhesion promoter. We use 3M VHB with an adhesion promoter on trim. I’ve seen it peal the gel coat off fiberglass trying to get it back off.

This is funny to me because I've never done any of that ever. Not on my truck rebadging, not on my ebay spoiler, not on the undercabinet lights i also hung with that tape.

Wet paper towel, clean the surface, dry paper towel to dry it, cut tape to size, align, stick, cross off item on to-do list.

You can get away without it, but it makes a huge difference.

3M automotive double sided tape, wash + isopropyl wipe down for prep worked perfect for me. Not related to OP's issue, but putting weatherstripping on the edges of the spoiler may also be a good idea as well (costs more but helps with weatherproofing).
