Replacing brake kit
I just surpassed 100,000km+ (goodbye warranty :() on my 2015 and probably for the past 20-30,000km I've been driving on 2mm left on my pads (according to dealership). I'm looking to buy a whole new brake kit, so new pads, calipers and rotors for the front and rear.
I was doing quick searching online and found carid.com and decided to speak to a sales rep via chat. I must admit I don't know too much about this, and still looking for a mechanic for the actual installation job. This person (on carid.com) was hell-bent on the fact I NEEDED solid rotors because my current ones are solid (I sent pictures and it was determined they were solid currently, even though online possibly says they're not but I'm not sure). I tried explaining I'm replacing everything, the calipers, pads and rotors, so would I not have the option in this case to get vented (if I so choose) in my rear if my new calipers allow for it? She insisted on no. I sent her an entire kit (that was listed to be compatible with a Subaru 2015 BRZ) and was vented and she said it wouldn't work. She could be right or wrong (it doesn't make sense however..) but I'm wondering if I could get some explanation for this, and possibly additionally any suggestions on where I should shop for a reasonable kit (nothing too expensive, I don't go to the track etc.). Thank you guys! :respekt: |
I also decided to attach the photos just in case:

If pads are worn, why do you want replace everything rest too? Usually one set of disks/rotors can last 3-4 set of pads. You wrote that pads were nearly worn, but didn't say anything on state of rotors .. what were thickness left on those, were they cracked? As you don't go to track and daily drive only, you'll be ok with OEM pads and solid old rotors and it will let save money. Possibly though i'd also flush with fresh brake fluid and inspect state of rubber dust seals and such, and if needed, replace those. See no need for full brake upgrade spendings.

You probably don’t need rotors yet. But need to know wear to be sure. You probably only need a set of pads. Get pads, call it a day. Once it’s time to change pads again you may need to change rotors. Get a pair of slotted if you want a performance street upgrade. Look at an actual brz/frs/86 website like ft86speedfactory |
The oem rotors are vented. I don't believe they've sold a car with solid rotors since Hansen's Mmbop was topping the music charts.
I suspect she is confusing drilled rotors with vented rotors. And drilled rotors are utterly useless over standard vented rotors except in the most extreme fringe cases. Also i would recommend inspecting the existing components before just replacing everything. As long as the rubber brake lines are intact, and the caliper hardware isn't seized, there's no reason to incure extra expenses replacing things that aren't broken. Brake hardware doesn't really spontaneously go bad. |
At some markets toyobaru sold with solid rear rotors for lower trim levels of twins (also possibly with R16 wheels). So non-vented OE rears also possible, though less common.

I can't tell from that picture if your rotors are vented or not. You need to look at the edge of the disc.
In the US, none of these cars got solid rear rotors as far as I know. I don't know about canada. |

And I said according to google, I should have vented. She's like no, those are clearly solid! Which I said, does it matter anyhow if I'm replacing everything with vented, to which she just kept saying "no you had solid before, so new ones must be solid too", which I was confused by if I was replacing the... calipers as well. |

Just get this and be done with it if you really want to replace everything. |
^just be warned those are slotted rotors, so they will sightly increase braking performance, but also decrease pad life and increase dusting.
|
Lol you are going to replace everything just because you hit 100k?
Wow dealership guys must love you. Don't be a chump. Work on your google-fu. Learn about cars from an older male role model. |
If the rotors aren't warped (if they don't pulsate the brake pedal when depressed) or the calipers aren't sticking (causes brakes to overheat), I'd suggest you just have the pads replaced, and replace the brake fluid.
