tow hooks ? for what--

so, i saw these different colored tow hooks for 100+ and maybe i just dont understand but why would you need them ? or i guess the question is - do you need them ?

are they in case you break down and the tow truck cant find a place to attach -- ?

or is it just for looks-giggles and a cool thing to have they are pretty pricey and i noticed people only get 1 not 2 --

sorry but this whole topic has me baffled as to why its needed at all.

do you guys buy them and if so - why ?

speed3 08-02-2012 03:22 AM

For track days when they need to pull you out of the sand traps. Most of the time they can't access the usual tow points plus this way is quicker and there's less hold up for others if they need to flag while pulling you out.

Mandatory at some tracks and almost always for racing.

C'mon gramps! I'm 42 and even I know what the tow hook deal is. (A) they are functional for recovery...or should be. (B) It's very JDM. (plz know what this means) JDM enthusiast dig them because they emulate the set ups on the racing circuits in Japan. (and Europe)
Get with the program trooper!

I'm pretty sure the colored expensives ones are largely for looks and giggles. I believe the car should come with a plain looking grey painted or metallic tow hooks that works just as fine for that purpose?

Scaldy 08-02-2012 04:01 AM

I think they look really cool... but how do you stop someone from just stealing it off your car? That would be my biggest fear.

Caliban 08-02-2012 04:02 AM

I know most of the HPDE, track prepped race cars are required to have the tow hook(s) bolted down to the chassis. Those thread-on(screw on) type will not work well. it will stripped the threads right off.

FT-86GOD 08-02-2012 04:05 AM

Tow hooks are a must for some....... I have roadside assistance and with that i have 3 times a year i can have the car towed if it "breaks down" have it delivered to a mechanic of my choice anywhere within the state......
I used to send my LS2 Ute to a racing motor builder i know once or twice a yr on tilt truck who is about 100kms from Perth (MarksWorkshop in York) but because my Ute was so low u could not reverse it on a tilt truck using the rear tow hook without ripping my front bumper off and contacting my radiator supports so i would have to take the front bumper off and use wood boards driving it on to not strike the ground... So any time i would need a tow, Possible breakdown down at track, damage or crash etc i couldnt just get towed onto a tilt truck easily without taking off my bumper.....

With tow hooks built into the bonnet it makes things so easy.... Because the 86/BRZ sits so low i think it will have similar problems getting onto a tilt/tow truck.... Having the tow hook/s u dont have to worry about removing the front bumper.....

For $100/$150 each they are well worth it for some..... Dont think that everyone wants them just to "look cool".... They have functionality and i can assure u if anything goes wrong with ur 86/BRZ and u need a tilt/tow truck ull wish u had them...

I would much prefer to attach straps than hooks though but there still in development kinda..https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com/im...x7v0rdeU93zhl6http://thumbnail.image.rakuten.co.jp...mg55950054.jpghttp://www.evolvedperformance.com/Ev...peimage_10.jpghttp://www.evolvedperformance.com/Ev...apeimage_8.jpg

Because Race Car!!

No but in all seriousness i use mine when i go to the track, a while back i was chasing a z06 until it spun out and the car died stuck in some dry grass, well next thing you know the car was on fire the safety truck got there on time to pull it out before it was too late but the car had no towing point on the bumper and the bottom was on fire so the guy watched his car burn to the ground. Since then on i always run a tow hook at the track specially in a bright color just in case there is smoke, dust etc it can be identified quickly so i can be pulled out easily.

PMok 08-02-2012 04:28 AM

no doubt it's a useful thing to have them in a bright color for the racetrack in case something does happen like you said.

but I think anyone who runs these all the time on the street is kinda being poser-ish and imagine what would happen if you were involved in an accident with one of these things in place. it would probably get tweaked or break off in a direct impact, and maybe even damage the tow hook hole/threads ... now you can't actually safely use it to tow the car after the accident.

|-Goku-| 08-02-2012 04:50 AM

I always thought that it added 25HP at the wheels. :D

Good to know why they are actually needed though

killercl0wnfish 08-02-2012 04:52 AM

Where did you get yours? I had the same one on my 370 and have been searching one for my 86.

I'd want a rear one as opposed to the front though. The front end is perfect looking and doesn't need any tow hook screwing that up.

Cusco make for 86

Draco-REX 08-02-2012 12:47 PM

I need to get a hold of a second stock tow hook. I'd like an aftermarket pair, but at $100+ it's just not worth it.

The reason why I want two is because there's no place in the rear to connect ratchet straps without an axle strap or wheel net. Having a pair for the rear towhook spots would make towing the car on a trailer a lot easier.

trifenix 08-02-2012 01:17 PM

Why do people dd with front and rear neon tow hooks?

Synack 08-02-2012 01:23 PM

Yeah I wish a non >$100 solution existed. That's crazy. I bought one for my 370 for $35 with overnight shipping for $8.

BlaineWasHere 08-02-2012 01:34 PM

I laugh so fucking hard at the posers who put those huge fucking tow hooks on stock (or even modded) Civics and the like...

Oh really a tow hook makes you a racecar driver now?

FRSowner 08-02-2012 01:43 PM

I'm going to put these are my car so that if I see a cement truck stuck in the mud on the side of the road, I can be a good samaritan, hook my car up to his truck, and pull him out.

Bet this honda driver wished he had huge f**king tow hooks lol.. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_nt7rHaizg"]Tow truck fail Part 2 - YouTube[/ame]..[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AFdbtX56jA"]Tow truck fail Part 3 - YouTube[/ame]

If he had a front tow hook fitted and was able to be towed on front first his radiator, intercooler and bumper would still be alive... May have needed a few bits of wood if it was super low like my Holden LS2 was but u get my point....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AFdbtX56jA

RandomHero 08-02-2012 01:47 PM

$100-$150 is crazy expensive! can you just fab one up with a high strength bolt and loop?

i agree with you its a pain to load lowered cars on a tow truck without a tow hook. Ive had my share of bad experiences.

On my s14.5 the tow truck driver ripped out my front bumper since the car was so low the tow line ripped the bumper form under the car, it would have been another story if i had a tow hook.

Also on my Evo X i had to take the bumper off to get her on a shipping truck the clutch was to hard to drive up the ramp and they could not attach a line under the car because it would have ripped out the bumper as well. A tow hook would have saved me the trouble of having to take off the bumper.

Here is the pic of my ex evo being loaded up.

hhahaha ok man, i get it.
let me pull my pants down about 1ft from my chest and not be such a sr. citizen next time. but i learned alot here ---

FT-86GOD 08-02-2012 02:16 PM

Tow hook is a must for anyone looking to lower or fit aftermarket bumper on the 86/BRZ unless ur willing to remove ur bumper if u ever need to be towed.. Otherwise it WILL get ripped off, possibly bottom out......

Unless u have a few timber boards and a well educated tilt truck driver.... Goodluck with that!!!!

Get straps u can push back into the bumpers if u hate the ricey fluro hook looking ones.......

norm24 08-02-2012 03:05 PM

If anyone wants a free and functional tow hook, go check where your spare tire/jack is. There's one there but not as fancy as the Cusco ones.

Asterisked Accolade 08-02-2012 03:43 PM

I really like tow hooks for looks and convenience. I plan on getting a nice bright red one. Probably the "TOW" decal as well. They are also useful for street use if you've fallen into a ditch or gulley.

So when they tow u up from behind with the tail hook u dont think the front bumper will bottom out?... And what if u have spun in the wet and they cant get to the rear? What then?

This car is low to the ground from factory especially with any body kit additions, or lowering.....

Jidonsu 08-02-2012 04:32 PM

I'm pretty sure the car already comes with one from the factory. It's with the tools next to the spare tire in the trunk.

For the front!?

norm24 08-02-2012 04:45 PM

Haven't really tried but the factory ones that come with your tools should fit either front or rear, no? Unless the thread pitch in the front and rear are different, which is highly unlikely...

Texas BRZ 08-02-2012 04:52 PM

I see one factory tow hook underneath the trunk cover... So that's the one I'll be using for my track days. Oh yes, I've learned from being stuck in the mud while trying to work on my car handling skills during HPDE events, lol.

BlaineWasHere 08-02-2012 06:21 PM

Those to low to be towed arguments are bullshit!!!

Just about every car comes with a FACTORY tow hook that you can simply insert into the front when needed. You don't need some BLING RICER hook hanging off your car when you go get groceries or FWD e-brake slides to impress 16 year old girls...
