DIY or Mechanic?

Guys im being a bitch.... I really want to modify my brz but I dont want to mess it up if I work on it. Im very particular and I dont want to pay excess money for a mechanic job that is shy of perfect. Im intimidated by modifying my brz because my job revolves around driving (Sales) . What should I do? I know if I knew how to do the installs id make it perfect for my liking, but on the flip side if I fuck something up I can be screwed. Thoughts? Btw I live in Toronto.

It would help telling people what you're trying to do.

What is it that you want to do to the car? Cosmetic mods or mechanical?

i think you need to take your 'new topic' button to a mechanic. it's clearly spitting, sputtering and backfiring.

Start with small mods and work your way up to bigger things. No one is born knowing how to do things. I did a V8 swap but there was a time long ago when I didn't know how to do an oil change. It was a long self learning process. Mistakes will be made but honestly it still ends up costing less than paying a shop. Set aside more time than expected for any work and look at a couple of install videos for the mod before attempting. No risk no reward.

I've worked in sales for years and drove my 86 all over. I haven't done major modifications to my car like some people, but what I have done I've done myself. There are youtube videos and/or DIY install walkthroughs for many items here on the forum.

Of course, as many have already said, it helps to know what exactly you are planning on modifying but you will save hundreds if not thousands by taking the time to learn and do it yourself for many things, and you won't feel like a 'bitch' anymore since you learned how to do it. :party0030:

One of the beautiful things about this car is its pretty easy to work on, and there is a DIY guide and or video specifically for this car for just about everything you could think of. Like others mentioned start off small and with things that won’t potentially leave you stranded like a catback and work your way up to the header and get a tune or at least OTS tune. Maybe do engine or tranny mounts next, slowly work your way up to doing bigger mods like brakes or suspension. Then maybe a Supercharger. It’s actually pretty easy to do all of those it’s just more “intimidating” and time consuming then anything. Just take your time be patient and don’t do something or move on to the next step until your 100% positive your doing it right and it should be fine.

The benefit of doing everything yourself besides saving tons of money is if something does happen or go wrong you’ll have a better idea and understanding of what happened or went wrong and a general idea of how to fix it. As apposed to always being at the mercy of a mechanic. It’ll probably add 30-50% more cost in install and maintenance to be dependent on someone else compared to doing it yourself.

IMO, if your job requires the car to be working, just leave it stock or only do simple cosmetic changes. Anything you do that could potentially reduce reliability puts your job at stake and is a stupid move.

So then I suggest you pay top dollar for a top rated mechanic. Nothing less, my friend.

I have the feeling you should just leave the car stock.

I vote that OP should DIY a V12 engine swap. Shouldn't be too bad and you'll be able to continue driving around to your job.

For reference (OP, the turbos are unnecessary, just keep it NA)

I concur. This considering only a V12 can top an inline six for power AND smoothness. I have cranked the throttle on an Aston Martin DB9 a few times. It barks startlingly on command. All 420 Ft/lbs of normally aspirated torque.

I disagree regards to driving for work though. His mileage allowance probably doesn't cover the $35K cost of admission (est.). And, the front isn't really long enough to tuck the engine behind the steering rack.
