How hard is too hard?
Hi guys. Just got my BRZ a week ago. How hard can I push it? I highway cruise at 4k rpm for a max of 5 min intervals, I rev it out in first and second gear after most stop lights. Is this going to give me long term problems? Im used to my honda being bulletproof with this stuff. Can the brz take the heat too?

Should be fine as long as you're past the break in period, wait for it to warm up, and keep an eye on your oil.

I drive mine like I stole it, I've done mountain climb-esque activities with it repeatedly. Just get a pcv catch can and you'll have no worries. Radium makes a great one - http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/radi...l#.XPzT81MpAwA

I mean, normal highway cruising is 3500 rpm or so.....

If you’re in the break in period you shouldn’t go over 4000rpm for the first 1600kms (1000 miles), according to the manual. I tried to avoid it best I could with mine during that time.
Now I do drive it pretty hard but follow certain rules. I always wait until it’s warm before redlining it, driving it hard etc. I always get my scheduled maintenance done when it’s due, Subarus don’t like tardy maintenance apparently. If you look after it, it will look after you. I’ve got 25,000kms on it and drive it hard at least once a week and have had no issues. Lets face it you’re not driving your nanna’s Yaris and I assume you didn’t buy it to putt around town in it, enjoy it. The car is more fun driven hard. :D |
Drive below 4K RPM until the OIL temp is above 190 after the initial break in period. Afterwards, drive it as hard as you like.

I actually have a thread about this. I frequently cruised at 4000 rpm for 10 minutes at a time when I was working in richmond hill, and I’m at 50K km and no problems. If anything, the car pulls harder than ever

My rule of thumb is to first drive like I have grandma’s China in the trunk and once it’s warmed up I go like there are Zombies after me moaning, “Brains....brains....brains.” Zombies not your thing? Use any imaginary motivation like dudes wearing shades and driving black cars or your partner in crime gave you up for a sandwich to the local gendarmes.
