selling car soon, have a question on selling Ecutek cable & dongle

as far as i know, the license key (USB dongle) is hard coded to my car, therefore that can't be sold to another party, is this correct? so the only part i can sell is the Ecutek cable?

i have flashed factory tune back onto my car, would dealer still capable of knowing the ECU had been flashed before? someone had mention with Ecutek the license is forever embedded in the ECU even after flashing back the stock tune. only way to erase it is by dealer's diagnostic tool? does this sound correct?

No, you can sell both cable and dongle usb together, it is not connected to your car
cable without dongle is quite useless

To remove license forever there is a trick (mp if you really want to do it, credit to @steve99)

thanks for the reply.

1. so the buyer would have to pay for another license when he/she purchased my dongle that has licensed to my car?

2. would it be okay to leave the license in ECU? at worst case, it'll get wiped clean after dealer start plugging their tool.

It would be fine, if you flash back to a non-RaceROM map it can be overwritten. Just flash the most recent compatible ROM for the ECU and hand it back. It won't matter once you've sold it. No need to erase the license from the ECU IMO.

Bringing this thread back because I’m now ready to sell my ecutek. As for the usb dongle that contains my license, do I have to wipe it clean before selling, since it contains unique ID that hard coded with my car?

The ecutek ecu licience is embedded in the ecu, not ghe cavle or dongle

The cavle and dongle key is not licienced or keyed to any vehicle it can be sold amd used on any brz\86\frs

Tunes you may or other person may buy would usually be keyedcto the calbe kit dongle id.

The dongle is the key for the ecuteke software not the ecu

The ecu licience is separate a new user would need to buy an ecu licience for there car

So if the buyer buys my dongle with the code already hard coded into my ecu, then how can he use the dongle?

ecuTek licence is embded to your imo ecu not to your cable

Your cable can anyone use it

To run proecu u should insert usb dongle

That's all

Dongle and cable is not keyed to car. Dongle is just licience key for the proecu software only

The licience in ecu is for ecu only

They are two conplelty separate liciences

I think Ecutek could do a way better job with their nomenclature and instructions.

Long story short, the cable and dongle can be sold to anybody for use, no problem.

-----

If you want to understand what's what:
  • ProECU Programming Kit: Retail kit that comes in the little Ecutek pouch (physically contains a Deskey Dongle and Vehicle Interface (Cable or Bluetooth). None of the items in the Programming Kit are tied to the car itself.
  • Deskey Dongle: They little USB stick thing. It actually contains the license to grant you access to ProECU
  • Vehicle Interface: Green OBD reader with USB cable that lets you communicate with the car and load an Ecutek Performance License. Now sold in both the old-style cable and bluetooth reader.
  • ProECU: The software suite that you have on your computer to read tune ROMs and access the ECU through the Vehicle Interface Cable. However, before you can flash a ROM, your car's ECU needs to have been loaded with Ecutek Performance License
    • This is actually a digital software asset. It's not in the actual pouch, but you go online and download it
    • A note: although none of the above items are tied to your car, sometimes tuners lock their custom ROM files to your unique Dongle/ProECU ID.
  • ProECU Performance License: This is the actual piece of licensing that is tied to your car's ECU. It gives you permission to write Ecutek's software onto the car's ECU, allowing you to load your custom tunes. Normally, the performance license stays with your car and cannot be unloaded/transferred to use again.

Just to confirm I do not have to delete anything or wipe anything off the USB dongle before selling it? Kind of like OFT’s unmarrying?

tomm.brz 05-03-2020 04:41 PM

it s not a usb drive, it s just a key to open ProEcu, said very simple... without it proecu doesn t launch

you can sell them together as a kit to anyone,
just flash the oem tune back to your car if you re selling it and you brought it back to stock for example
