e85 problem. Meter showing e40, not e80

Just filled my car with e85 completely at the new Wawa where i live.
The ethanol meter should show e80+ but it only shows e40.

Is this a problem with my ethanol meter or is the pump itself?

I haven't filled my car with e85 in over a year since the the place near me closed down but now a new place just opened.

Most probably a bad batch of E85. In my area, E85 usually ranges from E60-E78, maybe four times in three years I ever saw E82 and once I saw about E87.

IF your tank wasn't completely drained, the remaining pump gas (E10) also contributes to the number being lower.

Buy an e85 tester and test the station, they are cheap

Agreed with the others, but also, most stations say E50-E85 or something, and they fluctuate depending on the time of year. In Philly, I bet they run a lower mix during the winter than we do in California or cold starts would be a bitch. That, on top of the fact that no one is ever empty when they fill up. Let us know what it says on your next fill up.

I run E85 exclusively, and I never see more than E78 this time of year, and I usually see closer to E70 in the California winter. Highest I have seen was E82 in the summer.

With most setups don’t you not see much more gains above about 70% ethanol?

your right, it has to be bad blend, usually my meter goes to e70-e80 when filling up completely on e85. i think im going to have to let Wawa know about this huge problem.

Yup

With NA setup probably E60 is already enough to reach MBT, that gives you room for bad batches of e85

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't tell the station that if it's marked as E85, it should be close to E85. If it lists a range, and it's within that range, it's ok. But E40 isn't E85.

Most likely decent blend, with E10 left in the tank is coming out to E40.
